Hey all. Is this a fairly active club? I'm relatively new to saltwater and would love to have access to a group of veterans here locally that I can learn tricks from.

125g with ~130lbs LR
3" live sand/crushed coral bed
55g sump w/refugium
8 bulb T5 light

any and all suggestions will be appreciated. Want to end up with a reef setup. nothing over-the-top or exotic....

Weclome!

I would call it marginally active to be fair. Some of the veterans have moved on and others seem to be occupied with work, family and other life demands. I have been a member since December of last year and there hasn't been a meeting to my knowledge. Of course like in all clubs there ar people coming and going all the time so the knowledge base is always changing. You can always go broader and go to the main RC discussion areas for a larger base of knowledge, so overall RC is very active.

I am sure the ones that are active on the message board can provide some good advise. I switched to salt water after moving back to Memphis a few years ago and have encountered challenges and came out on the other end. I have a tremendous amount to learn, but am having a great time along the way.

Do you homework first. Buy books and/or read things on the internet. Find out how much things cost before you move up to a larger tank. Don't start buying corals until you understand the difference between soft, LPS, SPS....they had different requirements.

So, tell us about your tank and what you are going to do...we will be glad to offer our advice

BINGO! What he said! ^^^ I Left work last Night at 7:20PM!!

For those of you that may not know this, President Bill Hampton ("ducklabdad") and myself (Marty Klauss) VP, have not only extremely demanding jobs, but in this past year, both our wives got sick and just wiped out our free-time. Jay Page (onereef) manages our Club's website, but he's been traveling too. BJ Armstreet moved to central MS.

I'm not making excuses, but I think its a fair question on your part to know what's been going on.

We were trying for a March Meeting, then we got busy again.

Keep the faith and let us know how we can help here on Reef Central until we can plan our next event.

Thanks Very much adn Welcome, ya' noob!

softies are probably best for beginners....sps are on the other end of the difficuly scale and more demanding on water quality. I have only been in salt a few years and started with softies with much success and have a couple of LPS...

Softies are easily propogated. I'm nearby and will gladly donate some softies to get you started.

Let me Know if interested.

Marty

I would greatly appreciate any "spares" you have. I picked up some frags from Chris earlier and they look great. Just finished re-aquascaping the tank into a 3 island platform that I like much better than the jumbled up nonsense that I had going on. My RBTA prob wont come out for a week tho.

I think your bigger worry would be it going on a trail hike where you don't want it. Not kidding. True story.

This may not be the most active group in the world but they are all down to Earth people who know their stuff and always are willing to help.
Im a relative noob too (18 mnths in) so welcome aboard!
Also we have 2 of the best LFSs in the country here in Memphis that will help you too!

Bracket50: so if you are doing softies/lps you might want to try a popular coral with many in this group - zoanthids. The LFS and RC members always have nice ones to choose from and the prices are reasonble for those just starting out. I have gotten into the Ricordea mushrooms and they too are reasonably priced and realatively easy. Both have a wide range of colors and sizes. Someone is selling some zoa frags out there now that you may want to look at...great prices. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1999034

As you can see I nabbed a few myself...:hammer:

Let's hook Up this weekend. Drop me a PM and give me a day or two to notice it. I'm not on the Boards every single day.

BTA: They like protection on three sides. Make sure it's "snuggled" in a nice cozy, tight spot.
