Help algae taking over!!!

is it hair algae or blue green algae? swaying to the current sounds like hair algae. in that case there is a problem more than likely with your phosphates. make sure you water perams are stable. the best thing to do is try to siphon out as much as you can and water change often. A phosban reactor may also be a good idea. I dont recommend getting a clean up crew or CUC that may add to your parameter problem. test and post your perams for me after you do the above mentioned.

I was having a nice algae problem (bubble, hair, and floating micro algae in the water column). Since I only had a BC14 with a CUC, my LFS recommended a 100% water change and adding the above product.
It should be noted that I was not using RO/DI water. I did a 100% water change and added the Kent Phospate Sponge and my water has been completely clear ever since (about 6 months ago). Your tank appears to be much bigger than mine. I had this problem for months because I was doing partial water changes with RO/DI water and the algae in the water column would be dilluted for a few days, but back to full strength in a matter of days.

My post may not have been very clear. My algae problem (imo) started due to me using tap water. I then tried to remedy by doing partial water changes with RO/DI water.
The problem was resolved by a 100% water change with RO/DI water and adding that product. The hair/bubble algae was taken care of by my CUC and the addition of an emerald mithrax crab.
I'm interested to see what happens with your tank. What is GFO?

I do think it is a green hair algae.

As of last night I started what will probably be an every day job: I cleaned off the back of the tank and scooped up all the algae, then tried to pick up as much as possible off of the sand and rock.
I also cleaned the filter socks, skimmer, and added the GFO from bulkreefsupply.
Any other suggestions would be great!

I'm in the same boat. I just bought a Phosban reactor, a small insump fuge and beefed up my clean up crew adding a lettuce nudibranch along with various hermits, snails, and 3 emerald crabs. I'm hoping these efforts combine will take care of the problem. When the nudibranch is done doing it's thing I will donate it to a reefer in need so it doens't starve in my tank.

Once HA takes hold it's very hard to get rid of.
I had some rocks in a QT tank that I started to top off with tap water.They were completely covered in HA within a week or two.
I had to scrub them by hand and then when that didn't work just let them dry out.This stuff is so tough there was one spot still green under the rock after being left dry for a few days.

Need to ask some questions.....
Are you testing PO4? if so, what is it?
what are all of your water perams?
What type of lighting do you have and how long of a photo period are you running?
How much flow do you have?
do you have a fuge?
What type of skimmer?
how long has this tank been setup?
How are you running the GFO? reactor?
stocking list?
how much and what do you feed?
How much LR do you have?
We need to find the cause and determine how to handle rather than just shutting off your lights as it will surely come back unless we find the cause.

Check out this link for algae, if you have nuisance algae then somethings more then likely off with your water paremeters.
