Help Anemone stuck in overflow grate

Hello,

I woke up this morning only to find my green bta stuck in the grate of my solana overflow. It looks like it's in there pretty good. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it un stuck? I've tried picking it up and pulling it out, but it seems to be completely wrapped around the grates somehow.

Turn the return pump off. Keep a powerhead on for circulation and let the nem pull its self out and possibly rub its foot with some ice to help the swelling and gently push back through the gate if the nem cant do so it self. It may be very stressed from the flow suction. Ive had a gbta go in powerhead and survived for 3 more months then withered away due to warfare with all my r0ses. Good luck
 
Thanks for the help. How long should I give it to try and get through itself before I intervene and try pushing it through?
 
You will only hurt it if you push it through. Then it will separate into three/four/five parts and will not survive.
 
I agree with worm....shut off the flow for as long as you can and let it retract on it's own.
fwiw, something may be wrong with it as well. try to look for any tares in the foot which would look like little white spaghetti filaments sticking out of a hole.

I can't imagine that the flow of the pump sucked it in unless you have mega flow going on...I think it may be sickly and weak...

How long have you had it?

either way, be careful with it and don't force it out.

Thanks guys. I don't think the flow is that bad from the overflow, it's just the basic solana overflow and stock return pump. I've shut the return pump off and just have my mp10 going in the tank to keep a little flow going. Hopefully it will wiggle it's way out soon.

I just bought it last night, I actually woke up early this morning because I was planning on going to buy some mesh screen to cover the intake (go figure). It looked great in the store and is pretty healthy from what I could tell. The foot had no tears in it when I put it in last night, and from what I can see looking in the overflow it still doesn't seem to have any signs of damage.

I guess all I can do at this point is wait it out and hope for the best.
 
how long has your tank/system being running?
what are your current parameter numbers and lighting fixture?
 
am, nitrite, nitrate all zero. cal 440 alk 8 mag 1350 (all with salifert). Tank has been up for about 3 1/2 months, set up with rock and sand from my 240. Radion G2 for lights.
 
temp, pH and SG?

do you know how much PAR your throwing out with the Radion?
could be a case of looking to shelter from higher PAR than it's was used to.
nems need time to acclimate themselves to new lighting conditions and if your running your lights are brighter than it was getting at the LFS and wholesaler, it may be why it's seeking shelter...

just a thought....
 
also, BTAs like to mount their foot in holes within the rock work. they feel most secure when they can pop out of sight when necessary...

can we see a FTS?.....please? ;)
 
temp fluctuates between 78.4 - 78.9, sg 35ppm, ph 8.2
I don't know the PAR numbers, but the lfs I bought it from uses radions and runs them at 50% on the radiant feature, so that's what I set mine to.
 
I probably wouldnt rub ice on my BTA,that might lead to tissue damage. But just give it time and he'll work it out on its own. I had a H. Mag about the size of a volleyball that went thru my JBJ 28 nano overflow and was fine. Just dont force/pull/push it and it should be fine.

I might put a powerhead aimed at him so he doesnt get comfortable there.
 
I agree the 'let it be' theory. It got itself in there - the point it's at it should be able to get itself out too. I might even kill the lights and see if that helps it turn around and come on out.
 
This happened to me kind of recently. I tried the ice thing, I tried letting it be with no avail. I ended up clipping the tops of the grate and sliding the nem upwards to get it off and put it back in the tank.

A small piece of him did end up "breaking off" of him. I thought I'd toss that piece into the tank to see what happened...That piece ended up attaching to a rock and growing and I then had two nems. One of them split again and I had three. (it also looks like we have the same tank - Solana?). I put one of them in my 120 tank and that has since split a few times for a total of seven!! :facepalm:
 
I ended up just letting it be. It made it's way out at around 3 am this morning. It doesn't look that great, but it is still alive. It has attached itself under a rock and has been there since, hopefully it will pull through.
 
Well it was not cut up it was just wanting to go through and find different flow.

it should be good to go.

Keep an eye on it and lets see some updated pictures.
