Help!! Are my clowns fighting or mating?

They look fairly mature and close to the same size- did you recently add a second one, and if so, how long was the first one alone?

It's really difficult to tell the difference sometimes, as the dominance ritual can become somewhat violent; however, it almost appears that you have two females, simply because one is not being submissive.

Bought them both together 5 days ago from same tank at petstore. They where in same tank at petstore for 2-3 days before I brought them home together

To me it looks like they are trying to figure out who is who. There is a chance you can have two females as well. As long as they are not doing too much damage together I would let them figure it out. If one gets beat up I would have a breeder box on hand to isolate the one.

And look for the telltale submissive shimmy. If you see that, you know they're working it out. Minor fin damage can be normal at this point, but should not progress into anything more serious without your intervention.

So I ended up returning my onyx to exotic aquatics. Didn't want to chance another death with this guy and they where very understanding about the whole situation.
