HELP, at a loss!!

all plastic buckets/trash cans have a code stamped on them, google the code and it will tell you if it's food grade. eg. home depot 5 gal bucket has code "2 HDPE" if you google you'll see it's food safe

Except that if you do that you will see that pvc is #3, one of the few that you are really supposed to avoid. I don't see why someone would follow the number guide for their sump and water storage, and then run all the water through the worst kind of plastic.

I don't think there is a useful list. If you go by the number codes rubbermaid bins are fine and your plumbing is deadly.

EDIT: I'm not trying to be a pain about this, I just don't get what you all are suggesting op should do to fix the problem.
Telling them to only use food-safe plastic isn't helpful cause that's not a thing. Googling it is a waste of time. There are a whole bunch of plastic designations: NSF, potability regional codes, the recycling program, a whole bunch of stuff that's fine in the U.S. is banned in the E.U. While it very well may be that the plastic is leaching toxins, there's not a lot here about how to avoid that boogieman.
