I've had my saddle back clown for a few months now and he still hides in the back left corner of my tank. I asked a girl who works at my LFS and she said hosting in an anemone would help bring him out of the corner (shes pretty knowledgeable) so i bought a bubble tip anemone its rose-ish in color. but my clown could careless about it. any tips?:hmm3:

Wait.

Some people it happens quickly some people it takes months.

If it is tank bred there is a chance it won't host at all. Post up in the clown/nem section will get more and better help

If the LFS girl was really knowledgeable she would know that clownfish do not host anemones but that some anemones will host some clowns. :)

BTA's are not a natural host for saddleback clowns. Their natural hosts are Heteractis crispa or Sticholdactyla haddoni. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2012/1/fish

It may eventually accept the BTA or may not.

i know its not the natural host but Ive read about a lot of people having good luck with these anemones. I'm just starting up this is my first salt water tank and I'm really just trying to make my little clown fish happy. if i don't have luck with the healthy BTA I'll order a leathery anemone but right now financially this is all i could get my hands on and the LFS had no problem with the other saddlebacks accepting these anemones I thought i'd give it a try. it seems like the BTA is following my clown towards the corner. I'm not sure whats going on with those two.

BTW, I had a saddleback and two huge BTAs... it swam by it but never did anything for over six months.

One day I come home and I couldn't find the clown... low and behold she was in the BTA romping around. Give them time. Like everyone said, not a natural host, but you just might lucky.

It probably helped that we had a small onyx already being hosted by the BTAs. Took the saddleback long enough to figure it out though.

well mine acts like hes trying to figure it out if i dont have any luck with him soon im going to get a carpet anemone or a long tenticle and see how he does with them

I've kept several of these fish. The first one was placed into a tank with a long tentacle anemone. They hit it off beautifully from the start. I purchased another saddleback for a separate tank which had the previously mentioned anemone in it (yes, its clownfish perished some time before). This one (less than an inch) was small and very skittish. It was actually freaked out by the anemone and was very stressed when I put them together. I upped the tank size and the clownfish opted to choose a portion of the live rock for its territory. In summation, this species is not an obligate host for anemones, meaning, in the wild, it chooses whether or not it wants to host with an anemone. My first one chose such a course, while the second opted for a portion of live rock on my reef. It comes down to luck with these fish. But if you are to try, it definitely helps to try the species of anemone mentioned in the previous posts (Heteractis crispa or Sticholdactyla haddoni), as they are the only natural hosts for this fish.
