Help - can anyone identify this anenome?

it's kind of difficult to say based on the picture, but it looks like it might be a condylactus anemone, it does not appear to be a pest anemone. What size tank and lighting do you have? With anemones lighting is very important along with feeding. If it is a condy, it'll more than likely start moving around a little bit until it finds a suitable spot in the tank.

No idea on the ID, but agree it doesnt look like a pest species. How long has the tank been set up? The anemone doesnt look very good in the pic. Have you noticed it inflating at all? Have you tried to feed it?

I have a 75 gallon tank with 660 Watts VHO Lighting, both white and actinic bulbs. I have these on a timer. I have a 30 gallon refugium, tons of live rock and quite a healthy amount of Chaeto.

We recently purchased this live rock from a guy who had it for several years and it has a ton of little critters running around. We found a couple of mushroom corals (tiny ones:-), couple small feather dusters and a tiny starfish in this rock already in addition to this guy. We had no idea he was in there until I started to aquascape the tank and flipped over a huge piece of rock and there he was. I think that is why he is looking a bit rough.....I think it was a tough ride. He actually looks better than when I first found him, but I was concerned that he doesn't inflate more.

What should I try to feed it? He is pretty tiny, smaller than a quarter.....

Thanks for the help.

Deb

Well, I picked up the mysis and tried to give him some. at first he seemed to take it and hang on. Even when some of the other critters tried to drag it away from him.

However, he has released it - uneaten and has shrunk up even tighter. He is just a little bit bigger than a marble right now.

I am not sure what else to do, my water parameters test out great and he has plenty of light....I hate to see him die, but I suspect that is what he is doing.

Any other suggestions welcome.

Thanks
Deb

Without knowing what kind of anemone it is its hard to describe exactly how to care for it. It may be that its suffered too much stress and isnt going to make it. You could try to move it to a QT tank, this may cause more stress. Sounds like you just added new rock to this tank, the cycle isnt going to be good for it.

Its most likely to be happy with stable water parameters, moderate water flow, and high lighting.

Keep an eye on it if it appears to be disintegrating get it out. Continue trying to feed it every couple days.

It could have gotten a few pieces of the mysis and eaten them. My sebae anemone grabs the food, but once it starts to close up on the food it usually releases whatever is leftover on the tentacles. I would try to feed it everyday until your certain it got some. Then cut it down to every two days or so until it starts to show signs of growth. I would also try some other food silversides, krill, clams, etc... but you have to really cut it up, almost shred it. I use a turkey baster to feed my anemone.

Good luck I hope it makes it!!!!

Well, thanks for all the advice, but unfortunately he gave up on me. Yesterday when I came home he was almost completely folded up on himself and his base was showing signs of disintegrating.

I have again tested the water and all parameters test out beautifully. Not sure what happened, probably just got too beat up before I found him among the live rock.

But yesterday I found another interesting critter. Not sure where best to post this, so I will share with you guys:-) I found this little pink fellow - he is about the size of a pencil eraser. He has tiny little stubby arms with little balls on the end of them. When he is opened up, he looks like a little kings crown......when he gets upset........well, he kinda looks like a blob of snot. I guess the best way to describe it, is that he sort of melts onto the rock.....

I will try to get a pic, but he is so tiny I think our macro lens will laugh at me!!!

It is pretty funny, all I have in my tank is the live rock we purchased (the guy had it for many years!) and I am so fascinated by all the little critters running around in there, I have put off getting fish because I don't want them to get eaten!

Thanks again!

Sounds like a polyp, or maybe zoanthid, but I really cant say that for sure. I have one that looks like it melts when its upset, it was also a hitchiker on a rock.

Do a search for pseudocorynactis, or strawberry anemone, or ball anemone.

Thay are common hitchhikers, and prefer the dark places in your tank. Here's a pic of some in my tank, you can just see their tentacles.

Here's an article. Keep in mind that if yours are just the small ones they pose no threat to your fish. The part about them is about 3/4 of the way down the page.
