Help coral frag stuck in mantle

Help, I dropped a small, 1" long' piece of dead coral onto the mantle of my Crocea clam.

Every time I try to retrieve it the clam closes up around the frag.

The frag is acropora so it has sharp edges.

It has been there about 3 days and the clam is not opening up as much.

Any suggestions?

I would think the clam would deal with it on it's own, unless its really stuck. Im kinda smirking to myself now, becasue Im glad its not me, because I dont know what you can do. I would just try to leave the clam be, and see if it can dump it on its own.

My clown is constantly grabbing mouthfuls of crushed coral and spitting them onto one of my clams. The clam gets them off on its own.

hold your hand over it until it gets used to it being there and fully extends the mantle and make a very quick move...i mean hold it right over clam until it gets comfy and boom...be careful of corse....are you saying its IN the clam OR ON the clam...if its down in it you are likely in trouble

On it.
When I hold my hand over the clam it closes due to the shadow of my hand. But I'll try leaving it there for a while.

thanks for the advice.

or take a little piece of rigid airline tubing to try to bump it off. that shouldn't cause much of a shadow reaction.

If you can get the clam and turn it on it side and leave it there the frag will fall out when the clam open back up.

Hey thats great advice.
But I just went to try this and discovered that the frag is already out, It must have lost it in the nite. :)

Thanks for all the help.

That is great :D

I would not recommend sticking your fingers in there. They clamp very tight. But glad you got it out.

In case this should ever happen again, would using a pair of long tweezers work ... little chance of casting a large shadow as well

I personally would just hold the clam upside down. It should fall out or lean it on it's side. They normally can shoot stuff out pretty dang far.
