Help. .Dying Clam!!!

So I have had this clam for about a year and a half and all has been well. Two days ago I noticed this on his mantle. It was much smaller then and I didn’t realize how large it had gotten until I turned him around for the pic. I thought at first it might be PM, but the mantle is actually disappearing. He has another small spot of it on the opposite end, Other than that he looks great. . . good color, mantle extension and response. What is this?? Could he have gotten nipped and it got infected? Would a FW dip help? Is it too late?

first i would remove those zoa off the shell.

if you have a Tupperware dish large enough to fit the clam that has sides that are as high as the clam, place the clam in it. if not move the clam to the other side of the tank or up on the rocks.

what fish, shrimp and crabs do you have?

it sure looks like something is gnawing on it

Yeah, the zoa is coming off. I didn’t see it until I turned him around for the pic. I have a CBB and a couple hermits. I have never seen the CBB anywhere near it and the hermits will sometimes get on the shell, but that’s it. It looks a lot more like something is gnawing on it in the pic then it does in person. The color of the flesh on the edge of the damaged mantle is blue-green and the damage seems to be growing. I will try to get a better pic tomorrow, but for now will put it in a Tupperware dish.

You have not added any new clam into the tank lately have you?

I did add a squamosa 3-4 weeks ago.

keep an eye on the CBB

Oops, meant CBS. It was late last night!! If something did nip it the damage is getting worse by the day. It is still only in two spots, but the spots are growing. Is there something I can do to help them heal? I put it in a glass container last night a couple inches larger in diameter and the sides are 2-3 inches taller than the clam. When I picked him up I found that he had kicked his byssal threads. I have my wife keeping an eye on it today. I also gave her a rundown on FW dip and such if something needs to be done quick. Thanks for all your help mbbuna, I know you are greatly appreciated by all in this forum. :)

if its getting worse then you need to do something. the problem is im not sure whats going on. to me it looks like something is nipping or eating it. my first guess would be a fish, but if it was a fish i dont think the clam would have it's mantle out the way it is in the pic, IMO it would be withdrawn trying to protect it self. i dont think its Polychaete worms or Polyclad flat worm because they would suck the clam from the shell i one night.

so what im thinking is a bacterial infection. i would try a 20 min FWD. match temp of RO to tank. while the clam is in the dip brush the shell well with a toothbrush. look closely for anything left behind in the dip container.

if that dosent stop the tissue lose then you may need to do another dip with something added.

ill send you a PM in a few

Just a quick update for everyone;

We did a FW dip last night and today he is doing much better. It looks like he is going to pull through just fine all thanks to mbbuna
