Help finding a decent protein skimmer for ~$200

I just bought the same unit for my new tank from fragfarmer, and the shipping was free. Now I just need to figure out how to set it up. This will be my first protein skimmer of any kind.

Oh, that sounds like it'll just fit. I will take a measurement, it's going to be close. I hope I don't ever need to remove it after it's in. :p

Also trying to find out about max water level, my sump has 12" of water in it.

Thanks!!

I wasn't able to find any clear directions indicating what the water hight should / must be. The H&S site (www.hsaquaristik.de) suggests that the pump must be covered and then the height of the water determines how "wet" the skimming will be. I would like to know as well so I hope someone w/ this skimmer joins the discussion.

Are you setting this up anytime very soon? I would love to get your opinion on noise, and even better if I could come check it out when it's running that would be great. It's a big investment, it'd be great if I could see it running! :)

I just called my AquaTek and he says middle of T-fitting is 12", bottom of T-fitting is 11.5" and sump waterlevel should not be higher than 11.5". In fact, his opinion is that the closer the sump waterlevel is to 11"-11.5, the more efficient this skimmer will work, probably run quieter as pump is fully submerged and less water return noise as the exhaust just gently falls back into the sump. Angela,

I'm in the getting ready stage so I won't be using the skimmer for a while. Since they appear to be in short supply, fragfarmer now has it listed as out of stock, I wanted too secure a unit and went ahead and ordered it. If you would like to try the skimmer out on your tank I would be fine with that. It will give me a chance to see how it is set up, and you a skimmmer while you wait for the new units to arrive.

Ok, I just measured my sump, and I think this may be too close for comfort. The 9.5" is probably just too big, i'm going to have to consider other options. This unit would probably have to sit against glass, and that will probably cause vibration which i'm looking to avoid. :(

Might have to consider the BM150, but it doesn't seem to be available yet. The footprint is probably much more manageable here.

You sure it isn't like 8.5 or 9" at the most? Man, 9.5-10" seems very excessive.

The ATI product sounds like it'll be a hit, it's 7.5" x 6.4" so it'll fit... but I need to find out what the wattage of the pump will be, and the water level maximum, and cup removal clearance needed. Not to mention it hasn't really been tested here.

:/

Great offer from James. Maybe you can check his unit out first to see if it fits or it quiet enough. If so, when your unit comes in, you can give to him. If doesn't work out, the BM skimmers look promising, but no one has one yet... all speculation is on overseas model and these skimmers needed to be redone to adapt to USA electricaly current.
