Help for my candy coral

nighttimenick

Starting over
 The nice guy setup next to pickupman gave me a nice pink candy coral at the frag swap. It was doing great till about three days ago. I started reading up on them. It has slowly stopped opening. I checked my calcium and it was very low. Have started dosing. It hasn't opened at all today. PH 8.3, salinty 1.022, nitrites 0ppm, ammonia 0ppm, nitrate 20ppm. I know my nitrates need to come down. Any advice? :sad1: Can it be saved?

None of that should kill it quick or at all really unless that Ca is below 250 - 300 or so and that wouldn't kill it fast, it would take a while. Whatver you do do it gradually and try to just let it get used to it's new home. Assuming your other corals are doing ok and the tank has been up a while it should come around. They are pretty hardy.
good luck, Chris

Some water changes will most definitely help!!! What's your lighting like?? Positioning of the coral?? Flow?? They don't like strong flow now, they like mild to medium flow.

what type of lighting do you have and how far from this lighting is your candy cane?

Also.. how much flow is it getting?

HI Nighttimenick,
I sold that coral to you. Sorry your having problems with it. The mother colony is doing great. If your frag does not make it please let me know I will replace it for free. your frag was under t5 bulbs at the bottom of the tank under a rock overhang. This really is a low light low flow coral. make sure to make those water changes to bring down your nitrates. It likes to eat cyclopeez and brine shrimp. about oce a week. Keep your calcium from 350 to 450 and it will do fine. any other questions please let me know or pm.

Shocky

I am doing 10 gal water (55 gal) change every other day till I get them down. I have reg flor lights till I get new bulb in for the 260w power compact I was given (thanks W.). My cal was at 120 but I have been raising it 280 now and still dosing. I have it placed mid tank on a rock with full light, I will move to shaded area with less flow. I will update. Thanks for all advice and keep it coming I need all the help I can get, I new and tring to learn. Thanks Shocky my daughter realy loves it ( its Pink). Thanks to all. Ricky :o

Update, My candy coral is still closed. It looks like it is turning back white-pink. It has been gray at the end. My salinty is at 1.025, ph 8.3, nitrites and ammonia 0ppm, nitrates still at 20ppm even with water changes. Calcium is at 460 to 470. It may be just me not knowing but the coral looks better now. It is not opening but it is beginning to look like it did colorwise when I got it. Thanks to all. Ricky

would adding some cheato (sp?) to the tank help nitrates or would that not solve the problem? I thought about gettin' a small clear tupperware with holes to put some cheato in for pods.

Is it maybe a lighting issue as well? It sounds like the coral was under really weak lighting. Experts, what say ye? Could low light caused this type of reaction?

I have to say it's lighting issue as well. Even though they are not light hogs but they still need some better lighting then reg flour lights. I would really suggest either find someone with better lighting to put the corals in or get those bulbs ASAP. The frag swap has gone by for almost a month, that coral will probably have some die offs or die off period if some lighting isn't provided soon enough. Good Luck!

I did get the 260w light up and running. I have had them running since Feb. 4. I touched one of the heads and it still fills soft not hard like the branch. As far a cheato I would like to have some if anyone has any for sale please let me know! Thanks guys I will update later. Ricky
