help for seaclone users...

i never cut mine no just the 2 mods ive done is the bio ball and the air stone ps.im handing out free bio balls that i mod ship will be 48 cents or what ever a stamp cost my time is free and buddy dont mean to hijack your thread sorry

hey i don't mind...i was just trying to help out the poor seaclone users like myself.....if i could post the pics i would certainly do so, but i am too stupid....i bet if you googled seaclone bio ball mod you might finds some pics....

i have not done any other mods except the bioball and i replaced the airline valve which cost me under 5 bucks....not too shabby for an almost free skimmer.....

I have not posted pics on here yet - I will as soon as I start my 75 gallon build thread :) - but from what I have read, you are supposed to copy the IMG link under the photobucket pic and paste it in your thread. You may have to add
after the link. I think that is how they said to do it...

Lol, I didn't think that if I typed what you should add, that it would attempt to insert a pic, duh. I guess I had the right info. Let me try it this way....

Before the IMG link, you need to put a [***].
After the IMG link, you need to put a [/***].
Where the *** is you type ING. Make sure you put the brackets as well. Hope that helps.

DustinLH00 and kokaneejr i sent out your mods today
cost me 52 cents to ship lolol dont worrrie its all free on me just trying to help one thing buddy381 for got to tell when you cut the bio balls watch your fingers lolol if i had a camra i would show you what a brand new scapel can do to a finger lol lets just say i wont be putting my hands in salt water for a few weeks lolol ps. hope you guys like the mods i made ya

i am sure that there are pleny of seaclone/seaclown users out there.....i admit i have one....i got it dirt cheap when i was first starting out.....sure i would love to have a great skimmer, but sometimes funds prohibit that....

anyways i have done a couple of mods which really have helped my seaclone work a little bit better....there have been threads and information on this in the past, but i am sure there are new users that would like some info....

first i replaced the air valve on the airline....i got one from home depot....while this hasn't help a great deal it has kept the air/water mixture constant...

the next thing that i have done was i obtained a blue bioball....it is approximately 1.5 wide maybe....i cut it in half with a razorblade, sanded that end down and then cut the other end so that all of the pins that stick up were about the same height as the maxijet propeller...i think i had to cut an outside ring off to make it fit around the impeller in the pump....let me tell you this makes a huge difference!!!! it took some sanding and playing around to get everything to work, but the skimmate is now very dark and it is skimming much more.....i highly recommend this mod to anyone that has a seaclone!!!! i don't have any pics, but i am sure that i can offer some help if anyone needs it....i could probably even make one for you for a few bucks.
can you send me one I would be gald thanks

i made my seaclone into a rather passable little HOB skimmer by simply changing the powerhead around a little bit, attach it to the base of the skimmer like it's for insump setup

then use a section of extra canister filter hose to attach to the intake of the powerhead

then insert the intake from the canister filter i wasn't using with the airline from the seaclone shoved inside the intake pipe and viola

can you show some pictures of this please

Do you think the improvement was more from the airline setup than the pump placement? Do you think that the plastic tubing that it comes with limits performance?

the 2 mods i did to my skimmer i sent the mod 2 you guys man you should see the crap its pulling now black green thickstuff 90 percent better than stock

update i drill 4 5/16 holes in the max1200 front case man that helps big big time lets way more water in if you dont own a drill you can send me case and ill drill it for free just pay ship

the edge around the impellare 4 holes works great update im getting a lot of pm on pepole wanting me to make thes if you would like me to make one pm me and i can do it for 2 bucks shiped i got a lot more pepole wanting them than i thought thanks

Hmm interesting idea...I may try that one too.

I also heard of the mod that you drill a hole in the side of the intake nozzle and insert the airline tube there and remove the black airline/venturi thing. That is supposed to take in more water and air. Has anyone tried this one?

Lol, great! I thought I would take a sec and post all of the mods I found when I went searching a while back, in case anyone is following this thread that isn't aware:

1) Decrease height of riser tube inside the skimmer body. This is the tube that creates the "tornado". Newer Seaclones are supposed to already have a shorter one than the older models. This is supposed to allow for longer contact time with the bubbles.

2) Decrease height of riser tube inside collection cup. It has been said that this is a little high for the lower power of the Seaclone and the foam has a hard time getting up and over.

3) Sealing the collection cup to the skimmer with a mod o-ring. I believe I have read that a toilet gasket was used and cut some to fit. I have also heard of people using plumbers tape, rubber gloves, etc... It has been said that the seal is not good enough here.

4) Replacing the venturi air valve with a more precise valve from HD or Lowes. Apparently this helps tune the skimmer more precisely.

5) Drilling a hole in the lid of the collection cup and running a solid airline tube down into the skimmer body with a wood or limestone airstone attached to an air pump. This creates more bubbles in the skimmer chamber.

6) The infamous BioBall Mod! Cutting and mod-ing a bioball and attaching to the impeller. This basically creates a needle wheel impeller and helps chop up the bubbles.

7) As mentioned above...Removing the black plastic venturi attachment from the skimmer, drilling a small hole into the intake nozzle and inserting the airline tubing into that hole. This allows for more water intake and more air.

8) Also as mentioned above...Lawnmower's mod of drilling the 4 holes in the impeller side of the impeller cover to allow more water in.

9) Earlier it was mentioned by jojoyojimbi that by moving the pump to the "in sump" setup and having it pull water rather than push it, you can gain better production.

10) I have also hear of people dremelling the impeller to make needle-like cuts. (Tried this, didn't do anything). And also mod-ing the impellar with fishing line to make more of a mesh mod.

11) Taking the foam sponge off of the intake, cutting it in 1/4s and inserting 1 or 2 quarters into the base of the skimmer body (where the water first enters). This is supposed to slow the flow and help chop up the bubbles.

I think that covers all of the mods I found. Personally, I have tried only #10 by dremeling the notches in the impellar. This did not improve anything, in fact I think it hurt it more. I am waiting for my bio ball to try #6, which I have heard good things about.

If anyone has any more ideas to share, please feel free. I am not recommending that anyone run out and buy one of these skimmers, but if you have one you may be able to make it at least produce skimmate...
