Ok so Iv had a cluster of green star polyps for about 5 months now and they were growing like crazy!! I did a water change and ever send then they have been completely closed up... Any ideas on why? I have lost my mind on why they aren't opening! Everything seems to be fine with my tank except them...

How long has it been since the water change? More than likely you just need to give it time and they will open. GSP is usually bulletproof.

I just did a water change. The were huge idk why they are closing up now... I do have a hammer coral that is next to them and I know it's fallen into them a couple of times could it be stinging them?? That's the only thing I can think of! They have water flow and they loved it there until one day they just closed up...

It might be something other than the water change. I have 2 colonies, a regular boring green and a toxic green colony. The regular type has closed up for up to 3 weeks for no apparent reason, then suddenly it's fine. The toxic green has closed up for several days at a time only to come back and grow like crazy. I have not been able to make the connection to what exactly causes the closing up because during that time, all other corals have been very happy. Maybe nature of the beast?

They'll come back. I really don't think you CAN kill them.
Mine closed for 3 weeks when I switched from T5s to LEDs.
Hey! If they don't come back let me know and I'll ship you some of mine!

Trying to get rid of some sapelo? :p mine closed up aswell and stayed closed for about a week...thrn opened and almost doubled in size in the next 2 weeks...and now they are closed again on day 2..from all ive seen thats fairly normal for gsp, so I wouldnt worry ;)

Usually when they close up for extended periods of time their base is growing (which almost appears like a purple candle melting and spreading). Then when they open back up they are much larger. Very hardy and like nitrates and phosphates.

No they havnt opened up yet :(.. But I can tell they want too! When the lights come on the peak out just a little bit and then in an hour they are closed back up again, I have no idea what's going on with them. Iv been watching them and I can tell they aren't dying..

Can we get a picture of them? Have you heard of taking them out of the tank and taking a toothbrush, a new one i'd recommend ;P, and just gently wipe down the purple mat of any algae growth.

This is what the look like..

No they are purple! They are starting to open up(: my temp gage in my tank broke so the water temp was higher than normal and I think it freaked them out... I got the temp fixed and a new temp gage and they are starting to come out now!!(:

Awesome news. I'm glad to see they are bouncing back. In all honesty, they are very hard to kill. I've had one polyp break lose and land on another rock and a month later, I have another section of GSP in the tank.

I also tried killing then in one spot I didn't wanted them and it was very hard. I ended up changing that whole rock in order to eliminate them.
