Help! Hi Fin Goby Breathing Heavy and Having Difficulty Swimming!

Just read the flukes thread. He didn't have any symptoms other than the difficulty breathing, but I only had him a short time so I didn't really get to observe him much. I still have him, because I wasn't sure if I needed him for my lfs warranty. If I freshwater dip him now will the flukes still fall off?

I don't think the freshwater dip would do anything at this point since they would most likely be dead already.

Be wary when at the LFS looking at fish if one tank has sick fish then more than likely all the tanks were exposed. In most LFS all the fish tanks are plumbed into a single system and coral tanks may or may not be on a seperate system.

It is really easy to get frustrated with this part. I had two different fish come in in at different times but one right after the other that caused me to question my ability to have fish. The first had ICH which was treated with Cupramine only to have it present the symptoms of an internal parasite immediately following the treatment for ICH. He didn't make it through the parasite and it was so frustrating. Used same provider only to have the Royal Gramma get sent with Velvet. Not only did he show signs of Velvet the way he was acting I didn't think he was going to make it through that first night. Same symptoms as you explained. Heavy breathing, laying on side, just acting off. Some how he made it but one of the clowns that shipped in with him did not. I am thinking they all essentially came in with flukes and the Royal Gramma was the worst case due to stress.

The day the Royal Gramma looked like he was done for I was ready to throw in the towel. Don't blame yourself initially if you know you have taken the necessary steps to get them from supplier to QT. There is a very high chance that you simply are obtaining fish that are not as healthy as they appear when in the store.

Hopefully they provide you with a fish this time that can make it through the first 24 hours. Maybe you should anticipate doing a Prazipro treatment regardless of how the next one comes in. There is obviously something in this equation that is remaining unobvious so treating for parasites might be a good idea. Keep us posted and hope to hear the next one is a success for you!

The fish all look fine to me, and have every time I've gone in to look at them, but that doesn't really mean anything coming from me since I have no experience in marine fish diseases...

Thanks for sharing your story A.Astore. That makes me feel a lot better! I am seriously considering treating with Prazipro as soon as I get the next fish home regardless of how it looks. I'm still waiting for my dissolved oxygen test to get here, but I really don't think that's the problem. I'll keep you all updated on how things go with the next one. The store has one set aside for me to pick up on Saturday.

I might as well pick some Prazipro up then and dose him when I get him. I just finished sanitizing the quarantine and adding all freshly mixed saltwater with some prime. The tests are all coming back good so far. Is dish soap and tap water with a good rinse off enough to clean the pump, or should I use a different one?

If it air dried should there have been any disease type stuff left it should have died. The only concern I think there would be is that you got all the soap off. If you know you rinsed well I think you would be fine. I use vinegar to clean everything and then peroxide to clean my filter socks that way I know even if it hasn't been rinsed/dried completely nothing will be effected negatively in terms of chemicals getting in the system.

I tend to stay away from any soaps and use vinegar as previously posted and I use bleach on a few things. Using soap always made me paranoid if I got it all off.

Well I got the dissolved oxygen kit, and it's reading 6.5 with the lights out and about 7 with them on. So that's not the problem. I'll treat the next fish with Prazipro in quarantine and see how that goes. Thanks again for the help!

Took my water in to the store to get tested on Sunday and it all came back perfect, so I picked up the replacement Wheeler's shrimp goby my lfs held for me. Floated the closed bag for 15 minutes, then netted him in. I dosed him with Prazi almost the second he entered the quarantine. He's still alive, eating well, and even goes out exploring from time to time. Hopefully this one is the one that survives. So far so good. It's been 5 days.

The new Wheeler's is still doing really well. I seem to have just gotten unlucky with my first two fish. Thank you all so much for your help!
