I understand the physical differences- shape and material, what I should have said was if the correct size and compatible material grommett was found and the install was done properly (correct size hole) wouldn't they work just as good as a Uniseal?

It is the shape and material that make it work. The inner diameter is wedge shaped and the relief cut is designed to for the groove and land to seal. I don' think you will have as much success with a standard gromet. It is certainly worth a try I suppose.
