help ID this

[Reefer king]

I have a thing growing on a piece of live rock i bought months ago, and it just in the last few weeks started growing. Talked to someone at a LFS and they didn't know what it was, but thought it might be a soft coral. Any ideas as to what it may be?

It's a red macro algae of some sort. Quite attractive too, not sure of what species though.

I've got some in my fuge too, under the right conditions it's quite pretty. I forget the name of it, but it came in on some live rock as well.

Scinaia algae I believe. Very pretty.

Any tips for helping it spread?

I think your best bet is to try and chip off some of the rock that it's attached to. You can then superglue or epoxy this algae frag somewhere else in the tank.

I never had luck "fragging" this macro. Under the right conditions it should slowly spread on its own. I have noticed if you cut the lighting intensity way back, it will go sexual. I don't think this particular one will become invasive though as it seems to be a pretty slow grower.
