Help id Tilefish

I have had this guy for 7 months. The LFS where I got him from just called him a blue tilefish. Can anyone id him for me?

I thought it was a blue jaw but his colors aren't as bright. He may be one but I want to make sure. He may be a changing tilefish.

I am crazy about tiles, I have a few skunks, a few purples, and a full color yellow tile and one off the very rare "yellow spotted tile fish".
This is what they call a dusky tile fish, this is not a purple. Trust me.

Thank you krkqm2008. It is a dusky or grey tile fish. How long have you had your oldest tile? I have a skunk tile as well for around 8 months. I hear that purples may not live that long, what is your experience with them too?

I had a purple tile for about 3 yrs. At first he was very shy, but after about 3 months he became the dominant fish in a tank with fairy wrasses and anthias.

Tilefish can be prone to bacterial infections and have acclimation problems from how they are collected. If they get past the first month of captivity they are quite hardy and disease resistant.

Thank you for the response. The two I have haven't tried to bully anyone so far but they do eat a huge amount of food.

If I am lucky enough to see one at my LFS survive a month I will probably get a purple or yellow tilefish.

I've had my purple for a year now. It has developed quite the personality. When I feed the tank, it runs up against my fingers. If I am nearby the tank, it will spit water at me. The coloring is unbelievable. One of my favorite fish.

The water spitting cracks me up. If you get one, make sure you have a net top at a minimum. They are jumpers

Good tip. Somehow I had one find his way stuck on my return pump. I have no idea how since my overflow is covered and I have a net cover.

Purples are very tough to keep, I went through probably 15 purples until I was able to keep a pair. Even then, they are a tough to keep
My oldest tile which is the "yellow spot tilefish" I have had for 3 years, and in all these years of fish keeping I have never seen on at any LFS, any online store, just the one I have, and. Have tried looking for one, never seen one.
By the way don't ever spend ur money on flashing tiles, they never make it, never ever make it. Plus they only flash when in stress lol

Purples do not have to be tough to keep. I had my first one for 7 years. The second on that I had was good for 3 years prior to a tank crash. My current Purple is in the tank for 1 year. He eats anything and everything. The Flashing do only flash when stressed or with a female around.
