Can anyone ID this anemone? My GSM loves this little guy. He's been feeding it anything and everything he can get. I've had to start feeding my tank almost twice my normal food because the GSM grabs all of the food so quickly and takes it back to the anemone. He's been doing this for almost three weeks now.

Today, he didn't feed the anemone anything! He picked at the food and spit it all back out, taking nothing home with him. It's the same exact food that I've always fed my tank.

Any thoughts?

I'm also curious about the anemone's placement. He seems quite happy in his little corner of my tank. I thought that anemone's needed a lot of light? He's in the darkest corner of my tank and seems to be hunkering down into the rocks. I have 6 80w T5s on my 29" tall tank in a layered fashion, so at the ends there are only three lights. He's about 18" from the lights.

Appears to be an Atlantic anemone, Condylactis species. It will move around to find the lighting and flow it prefers.

Atlantic anemones are not natural clownfish hosts, but as you can see, some clowns don't seem to mind.

With increased feeding, increase your water monitoring and potentially waterchanges.

Scott - Thanks. I monitor my water at least weekly and change 10-15% a week. My tank has been up for almost 4 years and it's pretty stable.

Just my totally uneducated guess... Perhaps the 'nem was starving and the clown fed it until the 'nem was in better shape? I don't know if a clown can tell if a 'nem needs more food or less but after three weeks of daily feeding, I'd think any 'nem would be less desperate for food. :)

Very pretty GSM you have there, too. :)

Missed the feeding question on first pass, sorry :)

The clown "feeding habit" appears to be more storage related and just happens to benefit the anemone. Clowns also "feed" rocks, tank corners, filters, etc. :)

Hopefully my GSM will slow down on the feeding so that everyone else gets food. My tang has been trying to take the food away from the anemone -- unsuccessfully!

I am concerned that he didn't even try to bring food to the anemone and also spit out everything that he picked at. I'll see what happens tonight.

Sonja - My GSM thanks you for the compliment. I should post a better picture for you -- he is gorgeous. :)

Expect her to eat more, she will feed to saturation and will not likely stop growing until she reaches the size of your hand :)
