Help ID'ing this snail?

I'm pretty sure it's a whelk of some kind. Got a few off some rock I bought from a friend who used to grab stuff out of the ocean in Rocky Point, Mexico.

It's probably not exactly a whelk, but it will be a predator, most likely on other molluscs but possibly on barnacles. If it's been living in your friend's tank for a long time, that may eliminate the barnacle possibility. I'd probably have to scrape the shell and compare from the apertural side to give you an ID to the species level.
