Help me build my tank

Hi there,

I was here for the past 2 years but have been off this site for about 7 months. I had a 450 gallon reef tank in my living room. I just got my basement done and now I am looking at add a new tank. I sold my old one as the seams were starting to seperate. I had some **** company called reef and pond in Denver build it. I was going to sell it once the new tank came in anyways but it made a mess for me.

Here is where i am at. I have a fish room built and I finally got my fish room :-0 anyone with a monster tank needs a fish room. In this room I have a Drain, water line, dehumidifier and separate power supply. Attached are images of the room. I will do my next post in a few min

Ok, now based on this. the tank will be about 514 gallons.

The tank is 2.5 ft wide and I cant change that unless I cut the floor I build for the room. The stand is 3ft tall and the tank will be 3ft tall.

If I make the tank taller and the stand shorter for each inch i go it will add 14 gallons to the tank.
 
My question is do I need a 3ft stand and at what point does 30in in width become not wide enough for the height.

Also, I was quoted by a local steel company 2300 for the stand.

The tank I am open to any solid company to build. Just not that crappy reef and pond in Denver. Tom never honored the warranty and never returned my call. Don't buy from them
 
Now I did build my last stand for my 450 gallon out of wood. So would you do this new one out of wood or steel
 
I need the room so I am going with steel. 2x2.

My stand will be done in a week and delivered. i will send you all photos when it gets here.
 
Hi all. Update to my tank. We will be doing some demo on the wall and tile. The size will be changing from 2.5 ft wide to 3 ft wide and from 3 ft tall to 4 ft tall. This will now go from 514 gallons to 822 gallons tank :-)

I will update you with the photos over the next day.

Looks like ur coming a long but with rapid changes in dimension do you have an idea how to light what your keeping? Any info on support tanks..i.e frag tank, sump, fuge, or filtration?
I would work on all that while getting quotes and figuring out the dimensions. Even if I had the frag, sump, and fuge up and running before I ordered the tank, just means I could get a few frags, clean/scape rocks, and everything else cause once I get a tank I want it filled lol... GL
 
Hi there, I was wondering if anyone was going to post :-)

Frag tank I will set up soon. This I will keep only till I get the main tank. The sump tank and all I will have custom built one the steel is in place. I like to measure once the stand is in place am a visual person.

I am thinking the tank will be here in Aug. Till then, I have a lot to purchase. This week I am doing the steel. I am getting quotes of 2300 from 2 places here.

I found a site called http://www.metalsdepot.com/ I got a online quote from them and it looks like it will cost 1000.00. I will call in the morning to verify. Then it will be shipped and I will get a local welder and pay him 200 to do it. Savings of 1,000

I am also going to order my RO unit as my old one is well, just old.

I am ordering OCEAN REEF MISER SIX STAGE RO/DI 150 GPD from the filter guys

There is a guy who sells sps and lps from his house in Parker. He has his basement set up like a mini showroom. Have you heard of him?
 
Yeah I know who you are talking about. I bought some ricordea from him years ago and they did real well. I think he has a 225 inwall with all kinds of stuff down there. It's been a while since I met him. If you haven't already done so join the local MASC club here in town. There is also a meeting for Denver Area reefers this Saturday at aquatic arts off C-470 and santa fe.
 
Wow 3 feet to 4 feet tall? how does that change the thickness of the acrylic? Probably lose a good 20 gallons just because the acrylic got thicker :D


Also if it's not too late I would highly suggest a vent for the fishroom instead of the dehumidifier, which is basically an A/C unit. I know the cost of electricity will be high, but if you can ditch one bit all the better.
 
As you can see from the 1st photo here it shows the 68 inches tall. They demoed the stand and rebuilt it 6 inches back. This will allow for the tank to be 3ft wide. I took the top up 6 inches and will build the stand 6 inches shorter to get my 4ft.

Tile will be going on in less then 24 hours. I am going to now order my steel tonight.

No, your dehumidifier is basically about as power hungry as an A/C unit.

Having a venting system to push humid air outside, and pull in drier air from the house is probably a much better approach than using a dehumidifier. But hey whatever you'll do I'm sure will be fine.
