help me catch a fish

aaaaack! my newest fish addition has to go. i got a beautiful flameback pygmy angel from your reef a few weeks ago, and figured i would keep an eye on him in case he decided to pick at my corals. no problems there, but he is harassing my black ocellaris pair to death! problem is... i have a wall of rock in my tank with endless hiding places.

so who's good at catching fish (or has a good fish trap)? i suck at it unless there's not much in the tank. anyone wanna help me? i live in davis, but i pay in beer! good beer, too ;)

Hey Brooke,
I just caught a pygmy angel last night. For the last week I have been feeding the fish out of a net. Last night I put in floating food and had the net ready and when she went up for food I got her. I have most of the fish going right into the net now. Pretty easy to train most of them.

hmmm, i don't know if my clowns have another week with this stress. come to think of it, i've been dipping a little strainer into the tank to dump the rinsed mysis for about a week now... the clowns come right up to it but the angel waits until the food goes to the bottom.

I have some egg crate that maybe you could use to screen off a section of your tank depending on how your tank is set up? That might be able to help isolate the angel so you can get him out.

What are the tank dimensions? think this might work?

If your fish likes to swim out to the front of the tank/away from the rocks. If you're around the tank, does it automatically hide?

I think this could possibly work as long as the fish likes to swim around. Is the entire top of the tank open?

yeah, the fish is a little shy when i get right next to the tank. but other times it will cruise around. i can take the canopy off so the whole top is open.

Does your fish have a favorite sleeping place?
If the number of exits are limited, you might be able to use a couple nets and get him that way.

thats what I was thinking the egg crate could do... block out half the tank after he moves away from the rocks. I just tossed some egg crate into the garbage can. It was used, but that could be cut to the tank size if you want to try that.

Brooke,

Maybe a switch in tactics would serve you better. How about catching the clown and moving him out to buy you more time on getting the angel? In my experience, clowns are pretty easy to catch - especially if they have hosted.

Either way, I can help you try whatever method you like. Sometimes having two people just working the nets makes all the difference. Let me know what evening works for you and I can head out there after work if you want to give it a shot (I work primarily in downtown, so not too terribly far from Davis).

i used netting bought from a fabric store to block off a section of my tank to catch my six line. Use your occelaris to lure them into the netted section

Use the beer and strike when he is drunk.

paliya, let me know how the trap works. how big is it? a lot of the fish traps i have seen are pretty big and i'm working with very limited open space in my tank.

mike, any help would be appreciated. pretty much any weeknight after 5 for me is good. i'm also pretty free this weekend. lmk. as for moving the clowns, i don't have any tanks set up to put them in right now.. but i suppose if it gets too serious i will have to figure one out.

any other suggestions? i may be using any and all of them. hehe.

Ok, lets shoot for Thursday evening. I will bring a couple nets and the snorkel. ;) Make sure you do not feed him the next couple of days - we might need to use some bait (have any fake black ocellaris' we could use? :D)

BTW, if you need to temporary house the clown I have extra tanks, bubblers, pumps, etc. Oh and my sump has a bit of room with nothing save snails in it.

I have caught hard to catch fish several times using this method. What I did was take a container that ARM reactor media had came in, any plastic container with a mouth large enough for the fish to swim through will work, and put a hole in the top rear to put food in. I added a couple of suction cups from a power head and stuck it to the glass. When the fish you want goes in, put a net over the entrance. Skittish fish will need to see other fish go in and eat before they go in and may take several feedings to catch on.

I had a Rabbit fish that seemed too stupid to figure out that he had to go in the container to get the food. He kept trying to bite the bottom of the container where the food settled. After awhile he found the mouth and I got him out of the tank.

I put the trap in my tank last night and it's HUGE. It's 9" long and 4" high. I glued some maxi-jet suction cups on one end and mounted it on the back wall. I would guess that most tanks have more than 9" from the front wall to the back wall and at least 5" of 'open water' from the top of the water line to the rocks, so it would probably work in most tanks despite it's big size.

Anyway - tonight I can try to capture him :strooper: I'll let ya know how it goes...
