help me choose a new PC monitor

I'm leaning towards this Viewsonic (model # VA2223wm).

Can I find a better monitor of comparable price?
Is this a good price for this model Viewsonic?

TIA tekkies!

Gary,

I would recomend the VA2231w model if you wanted to go Viewsonic. Its an LED which has far less power consumption and a longer projected backlight life. As a computer tech I can tell you, when the backlight goes, new monitor shopping you will go ;)

The reviews state that it does not come with a DVI cable. If your computer has the spot for it, I would buy one of those to go with it so you get the best picture quality. It is usually white and looks something like this: [ - ::: ::: ] or [ - :::::::: ] <-Three dots tall instead of two! vs the 16pin blue plug the older monitors use.

That Acer is nice too if you wanted to stick with LCD vs LED. Hanns G is another great product at lower costs as well.

Happy shopping!

Jesse

LED uses less power and generally has a much higher life span than the traditional LCD monitor. LED models are also more lightweight, and bright.

The brightness is really the only thing I have heard as a con which is arguable. Some say that with the LEDs being as bright as they are that some light bleeding may occur in high contrast images. Think of a white logo against a black background, the bleeding would be light spillage from the logo onto the black background creating a "glow". True, I did see this with the first models out, however they have toned it down and most of us out there aren't going to use the brightest settings on the screen(I know I dont!)

Any other questions throw em my way!

p.s. As a tech guy both in and outside of work, I would buy the LED if I was the one shopping for it! ;)

are there any advantages to having LCD over LED?

what are the pros and cons?

IMHO monitors are personal. go look around sams club, BJs, best buy and find a brand which has a look you like. part of the reason I bought the laptop I use is because I like samsung displays which this laptop have. walk around and check things out.

For the BJs and Sams, they will both give you a one day pass. If you don't like the price at retail look around on-line.

Samsung, hands down. The things are bulletproof and the picture quality is awesome. Switched to a viewsonic at one point, wish I never did.

Gary,
I know you just posted you purchased your monitor already but.....

I just went through this for my work monitor since I work from home. Bottomline is your better off getting an LED TV than a computer monitor for resolution, price and maximize the use of the TV. There are no benefits to get a monitor over LED or LCD TV except price if your getting something like 19 inch. At 26 inch level, you have samsung and LG at a fair price. Best of luck with your purchase. I am glad I went with the LED Samsung 26 inch....sweet looking style and good quality image for the size.

this kind of opens up a whole 'nuther train of thinking.

I kind of wish you'd suggested this earlier.
I also wish that I would have asked about this earlier!

In any case, I have a nice PC monitor and a crappy television :)
The good news is that I don't watch much TV but it sure would be nice to watch the Bills beat Minnesota on a better television!

just paying you back for all the wise guy remarking you make to me...lol

kidding Gary.....

I did not see the thread until you had already posted it.

Most people don't realize that for about the same price it makes more sense to get a LED TV instead of a PC monitor or LED Monitor because it is more multi-functional even if you dont need a TV. Some day you might want to move up to a laptop and you could use that TV in your bathroom, kitchen or in the garage :)

I am sure there is a 30 day return policy. Best Buy has one with no questions asked with receipt and no stocking fee which wasn't always the case.

here's the "problem".....

here's the "problem".....

my wife and kids need a TV to watch while I'm on the net.

I think that I made out for once. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

my (older model) PC doesn't accept the DVI cable plug...
does anyone know if they sell such a thing as an adapter?

How come everything on my screen is horizontally stretched?

radio shack does.....they have adaptors that can work with it as well as HDMI adaptors too if your LED has a plug for it.

Right click on the mouse and click on personalize...then display settings. you can adjust the resolution to fit your screen.
