Help me decide-Canons

OK, so I'm facing a big decision. *Hopefully* I can find someone on here that has experience with both the Canon Powershot S5IS and the Canon Powershot G9. Anyone? I will be getting one of these, I just need to decide which, so even if you've only used one, do chime in.

Much appreciated :)

I'll start by saying that I have neither. BUT...

Based on THIS, it is a very close call. I think it boils down to what else you have to take pictures/videos of.

I like the S5 IS for the face detection. I like the look of the S5 IS over the square "fake" look of the G9. The G9 does have a larger image size (allowing for more cropping, which could be important to you), and better video (which is great if you have kids). The G9 takes a proprietary battery which you may consider to be a good thing (or a bad thing, depending on your tastes).

I'd have a hard time choosing between the two. The S line looks like a better line of cameras with the G line having a newer model. I'd probably pick the S5 IS.

I have never used the G9 but I purchased the S5IS before I bought my 40D. I may have been expecting too much but I wasn't happy with the image quality and returned it for the Canon 40D. I am very glad I did. The powershots are nice but they are basically a point and shoot with a better lens and a hot-shoe for the flash. The extra money at that point even to go to a cheaper slr would inho be worth the money.

Of course if you are also looking into the video side a SLR can't help you there and the video capability of the S5IS is impressive as long as you have enough memory to make it useful.
