I am going to put an order in with socal creations for a sump.
it's gonna be 40g, 36x16x16.

I plan on having 3 compartments and will longterms use a calcium reactor....does the calcium reactor have any affect on the sump design?

what else should i ask for in the sump that might come in handY?

I would think you would want it bigger. Do you plan on having other goodies in the cabinet?? Maybe something 42" or 44" Long. External or Sub pump??
Probe holders, lid(s), sock??

put in a built in water change chamber.. i cant tell you how glad i am that i did...

:inlove: :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: that sump....

Golan I think you should increase your sump volume. Because it is a 40g sump it will only have a total of 20g of water in it max. (remember the 40g isnt completeley filled with water).

Plus a bigger sump will allow more water from your main tank to overflow the sump if tragedy were to ever strike.

More water = higher bioload.

i have 2 1.5" drains on the tank.. one on the left is for the Deltec. one on the right gets T into the fuge and emptys into the Bar Skimmer area. i no longer use the barr skimmer.

to do a water change i close the ball valve to the fuge. this stops the flow into the water change area.. i have a mag pump in the fuge area that i turn on and it shoot the water out of the water change chamber and into the house sewer drain line. when it is empty a float switch turns on and fills the 25 gallon chamber with RODI water . Another float switch at the top of the chamber stops the RODI water. I then turn the ball valve on the mag pump in the water change area and that same mag pump now mixes the water. Open the ball valve on the fuge and bam.. 25 gallon water change. i dont even get my hands wet.

here you can see the left drain to the deltec and an exta T to release back pressure

and here is the right. 1st ball valve on top corner shuts off the drains completly and fuge and Barr area each have a balve valve so i can control the flow.

guys....i HAVE to fit other things under the stand - cant have it anywhere else - reeflo dart, 20H tank for top-off water, calcium reactor, and leave room for other things that may come up in the future...so i do not want to do longer than 36" - maybe i should do 36x18x18.

DRC69....i may use a sock on and off and i will use a submersible pump.

Gabriel....for the time being, I plan on syphoning the bare bottom while doing water changes, but longterm, that water change chamber and so forth is a good idea...but i am in an apartment and cant have stuff running on the floor - not sure how i would accomplish what you did.

Sam..i hear ya...i'll go a little bigger than what i planned.

go bigger... and make sure that you count the water that will flow back in the pipes...

My tank overflows about 5 gals when the power goes out. It sucks and my wife hates it.

There you go Golan. Go wider if you cant go longer.

Just use up the complete width of the stand like Gabriel did to his. Its short but it is very wide and he has more than enough room for equiment.

why are you devoting 20 gallons to ATO just make your retun area larger.. same thing.

use a mag pump and attach a garden hose to it.. shoot it down the shower... i am just saying.. those 5 gallon jugs get old real fast with large tanks...

thinking ahead now will save you soo much time later..

Gabriel...i want a large top off resovoir for kalkwasser use - so i dont need to replenish it often.

My wife and the baby are in Israel now...im defintetly coming over on the weekend.

Golan, I have a 4 feet long stand and I'm using the same dimension sump as you. I also have my external return in there, co2 tank and calcium reactor all setup in the tank. You can go bigger and still fit everything.

does the calcium reactor or any component of it need to be right next to the sump? or can it be on the other side of the stand?

WoW... that's a sump? looks more like a luxury condo floor plan to me. I get headache just looking at it. You gotta plummer license?? you got permit for this??? hehe... nice..
