Dear All,

I have my hammer corals for about 3 weeks now and as I am just a newbies for LPS, so I am having my hammer and torch as a "guiness pig" to try if I can be succeeded before adding more corals.

my hammer has just die off from one of its branch and I have observed that another branch beneath it is also seems to be not expanding like the rest. I have observed that if I open both halides (150watt each) then the said branch will some how expand but not as much as others.....is this means this one is going to die soon? please help me diagnosed if this is the lights or water parameter. by the way, my water param as of last night :

KH----8 DKH
CA ---400 PPM
NO3 --0.5 TO 1 PPM (SALIFERT)
PO4 ---0.16 PPM (HANNA)
MG ----1350 PPM

here is the photos:
1) with 150 watt halides running
2) with 2 x 150 watt halides running for 6 hours

cheers,

Your parameters look fine. Too much flow could be a problem In some cases. Have you ruled out pests? Did you add this coral recently, or is it a new addition?

Thanks for your response.

I just started to add corals 3 weeks ago and this was one of the 2 corals that I am trying to check if my tank is ready for lps.

I have dip it with coral RX before placing it in my DT.

cheers,

any further advises? should I just cut off the branch that is receeding? but it seems that some stem still opening up although some seems to be so thin????

A dead branch won't harm anything in most cases unless it was suffering from a bacterial disease like brown jelly disease, but it can be cut off if you like.

So it seems like the other polyps are now doing fine, right? Based on posts in this forum and others, it seems like hammers are a little more finicky than other like LPS like candy canes & favias, for example.

How often do you do water changes? I thought the calcium could be a bit higher.

I do water change once every 3 weeks with 30% WC. as I travel a lot.

the high calcium is because I added some cacl2 in the salt mixing as I thought I need to add a little more calcium. normally it is around 400 ppm with my red sea pro salt.

cheers,

thanks RF,

I suspect my hammer was having some diseases that I dont have any idea whjat causative agent. but for sure he is sick. as soon as I cut of the branches, I think those healthy one now is just fine.

I just hope it stay that way now.

cheers,

I just had something similar happen to my frogspawn. One branch looked like crap, changed a dark color, wouldn't open, looked very similar to your pic.

Ended up being a bit too much circulation hitting it in just the wrong spot. A rock I added a few weeks earlier must have changed the direction of flow just a bit. I moved it slightly out of that area and 2 days later it was looking great again!
