Can some point me to a good thread about seeding base rock. I have some time before the tank gets set up and would like to start this process now. Thanks
Don't know about a thread but I stuck marco rock in a tub with some really nice cured indo rock recently (3 big pieces of marco with a couple big pieces of live rocks) for about a month under low intensity fluorescent light. It has been in my DT now for 5 weeks and I am seeing lots of coralline starting. Had a heater and a maxijet in the tub and threw in food like there was a couple fish. I have a rebuild thread that describes it here http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2238444
rsaha is pretty right on with this advice. See if you can get a nice piece of cured live rock to put in your dt. A few smallish pieches scattered around even better. There isn't much more to it than that. I've seen those "Tanked" guys on tv pour some kind of liquid in to cycle a tank. Don't know how effective, but like rsaha has pointed out LR has alot af good stuff on it...
It does not take much... I mean you can not put it in today and expect to take it out and use it tomorrow.
No matter what I end up doing in the future.. I will prob just keep my rock active and happy... that way I can either get rid of it or use it in a new tank...
That is if I decide to stop what I am doing now...
Just find a friend or even go to a LFS and get a piece or two... Look for something that looks 'interesting'.
My very first piece of LR was covered in GREEN and pods... and a few aptasia:
