Recently added quite a few images to my database - stuck with IDs for a few though. Anyone know what any of these are?

Scientific names would be appreciated!

cool fish.. wish i could help but i dont know the names for anyof them...

free bump for ya though...

1. Spadefish of some sort?
2. Chaetodon xanthocephalus (Yellow Head Butterfly)
8. Pseudobalistes flavimarginatus (common name? I think we called them pineapple triggers back in the day)

That's all I've got :D

Those are tough. I bet someone in the Aggressive forum could ID the puffers at least, and maybe even the scorpionfish.

Oh, and the juvenile filefish looks like one of those sargassum ones, judging from the color and growths on the trigger fin, and some starting on the chest area.

yes the filefish looks just like the ones i'd catch in the saragassum weed on the beach in miami. my native forida fish books are in storage but i'm sure the scientific name is in them

I'm not 100% sure but I think 6 is Arothron nigropunctatus. If I'm not mistaken the black form is just a color morph of the common dogface puffer

#5 looks to be some kind of Epinephelus grouper, possibly E. summana. #9 possibly is an ambon scorpion fish or a Scorpaenopsis scorpion fish of some kind, #7 stellatus puffer - arothon stellatus

1st fish common name is old wife, ive seen some size of dinner plates.
Yep. They (Enoplosus armatus) are hard to narrow down using families, since they are the only fish species in the entire family. The filefish is a juvenile Acreichthys tomentosus and the grouper is indeed E. summana. The rest look entirely correct, as far as I can tell.

I have this fish as a seagrass filefish too - looks different to the specimen above though....

Actually, other than some extra blotches, and the fact that it's "flaring" what little finnage it has, they look amazingly similar, IMO.

Agreed. The unfortunate thing with this species is that it is fairly variable, IME (which works to their advantage, anyway). It can take a while to narrow down fish like that and it is definitely easy to be thrown off ( I know I was :( ).
