Help me kill off anthellia

Krazy

In Memoriam
I want to rid my tank of the last cluster of anthellia, its on rocks I cannot move, I placed a frogspawn in the middle of it, hopeing to sting it to death but at the same time I wonder if it will cause it to go other places in my tank...

How can I kill it off ?

The only actual thing I can see working is taking some black trash bag, covering the whole area and placing live rock on top to hold the bag down for a couple weeks...

do you think that'd work ?

any other suggestions you guys/gals have to help me ??

not looking for any humor with this, just a solution to the annoying problem :(

From what I have experienced with Anthellia putting the frogspawn near it WILL make it disperse to survive and go elsewhere in the tank....I've seen it for myself in my 180. Only thing is I like anthellia so I was happy to see it come back all over the place.

I don't know how to get rid of it...just know what will happen if you try the "frogspawn trick".

Yeah I will be moving my frogspawn in the morning then, dont want it all over the tank, damn stuff didnt even seem phased near the frogspawn, I guess I may have to try the trashbag trick, I tried covering it with rock, it worked for about 2 weeks until it grew up, threw, and over what was covering it...

you will have to remove the rock from you tank and physically remove the Anthellia from the rock.. You need to scrape the rock clean with a razor or scrub it with hot water and an old toothbrush. That stuff is hard to get rid of and might even stay gone for a while and then one day......POOF!!!!!!! It's back. ....

I would go the garbage bag route unless you are putting all if your corals in the bag and putting them on the back porch for the garbage man......:D

"That stuff is a pain to remove"

Your not kidding, I wish I could remove the rocks it were on, but they are both basketball sized rocks and they are the foundation of the layout :(

Why dont you think the garbage bag over the anthellia area would work???

hypo salinity shock and exposure to air.

It works awesome.

I cant take the damn rocks out though

why wont smothering them with a black trash bag work ?

if you can't take the rocks out, you will have to go in with sharp shears and trim it like a haircut, and then shadow out the rock. covering it with plastic can create noxious gasses from biological process and restricts waterflow. This can lead to more problems.

Once trimmed, you should be able to do well with a new small wire brush or simply pick off the base with your fingers.

now that's what I'm talking bout ESPI (check other post for round of appluase)

I think that'll work well, I'm gonna have to go buy some nice new clippers just for the tank, I see what you mean with the bag covering it causing problems... At least by trimming it there's a chance to get the damn skin off the rocks with a brush (there is HOPE)

* lou already covered my classic answer " Try a Homelite weedwacker" , so I tossed up some advice since the thread was not fully answered as of yet.

Yaknow, for S H I T S A N D G I G G L E S , you could try making crop circles in the anthelia and take pics for the Weekly World News... I bet they've never seen aliens making visits to reef tanks as an article before...............

There's certainly enough in my field of dreams...

I've used the shading technique before with no problems. I usually used big clamshells though. I don't see the supposed problems as being a real issue. It won't drop dead all of a sudden, but stay retracted and peter out slowly.

I never used black plastic, but if you do make sure its held down securely because if it comes loose and clogs an intake you could be in for trouble!

Could also try some concentrated kalk. Or I'm sure Joe's Juice or any of the aptasia killers will work. Will be tedious though.
