Help me plan my drilling

I want to drill my 125. Eventually it will be my sps tank. I want to put an over flow in each corner.

How does the stand pipe behind the little wall work. I have seen them with an upside U. What happens if it looses suction? Does anyone use an open stand pipe so water just runs in it. Does anyone have the return coming in a wall?

I was thinking about 8 holes. 2 going to sump from overflow, 2 return from that. 4 in and out on a closed loop.

What are my chances of drilling 8 holes without breaking anything. Hinch made it look easy at the swap he demonstrated at.

Thx for the advice
Craig

I dont know what to tell on the risk factor, never drilled glass myself.

I assume you are talking about a Durso standpipe, they wont fail if made correctly, not much to them. You probably wont want an open pipe, it would be very noisy. My returns on my old 225 were drilled in to the back, works great and I would do it that way again. HTH

Craig, i would buy a like 3 of those tile cutting bits and a 12 pack of beer, we'll get-r-done.

I drilled my moms old 125 for monty, nothing to it....8 might be a little much though. Are you going to do a closed loop? If so i would think 4 or 5 would be plenty. By drilling 8 holes you creating all kind of weak spots.

As for the durso they are the way to go, definitely a lot quiter that way. As far as the return through the wall, i did it on my old 24 gallon, was pretty nice.

I've used diamond holesaws and diamond dremel wheels (but mostly a diamond bandsaw for stained glass projects) and have to say that drilling glass is pretty easy so long as you're patient and let the bit, rather than pressure, do the work. Keep holes away from the edges of the glass panes as that is what really causes the problems with weakness. And of course, smaller holes are safer, but of course it's a balance of that and flow.

Is the calfo style where it's basically flat along the top of the overflow box? No teeth? If so I converted my HOB overflow so it was that way and I liked it a lot better than with the teeth. It really helps pull the crud off the top of the water better. Make sure you put some gutter guard or something over the top though. Otherwise you'll end up with snails and other crap in your plumbing! :rolleye1:
