Help me select my fish please.

My tanks is a 240 gallon. 8' x 2' x 2'
Maximum circulation, bare bottom.
Astrea snails, emerald crabs, blue leg crabs, brittle stars.
Mix of sps, lps, zoas.

I am ready to move forward with the purchasing of fish.

One thing that I think is important is fish that will help maintain the tank....eat algae, antipasta (if possible), and any other uglies that need to be gone. Keep in mind I don't have any sand or anything. Not sure though if I should be thinking along these lines when it comes to fish selection.

After that, I am pretty much a newb when it comes to saltwater fish. I would like some hearty fish that can hopefully survive my learning curve. Also I don't want a lot of agression in there.

So please go ahead and recommend possible fish for me. Thanks.

Are there any you like? With a tank that size you can get quite a few different kinds........ I'm partial to yellow tangs. If you keep some other fish of the same size as the tang, I've never had a problem with aggression. You might think about getting a schooling fish like some chromis or anthias, that would like nice in a big tank.

Well peppermint shrimp will kill your aiptasia but that is not a fish. Tangs can be difficult to keep but if you are willing to take the risk then more power to ya!

Sounds like the thing for you to do is take a tour of some tanks and LFS's and see what kind of fish YOU like and would like to have, then do the research on them. Nothing worse then spending 60 bucks on a fish to find it dead because it isn't compatible with something you already had in your tank... :(

Thanks for all your help(s).

I pretty much know what I want, I guess.

But try doing a search for fish compatability and everyone has their opinions....."well, I had one that NEVER did such and such" while others say "under no circumstances get one of THOSE"

And it seems if you want to own ANYTHING other than a yellow tang you get a million people barking about how my tank is too small, not enough flow, that Tang will kill everything, etc.

The only thing people seem to agree is that I need all the usual suspects (which is fine)

1. chromis
2. clowns
3. yellow tang
4. striped wrasse
5. Blenny maybe
6. Goby

I guess I thought it would be fun for people with tanks and fish to have a clean canvas (my tank) and just shoot out what they would have if it were them. If you still have any ideas I am up for them.....

You have a 240g you have enough vollume for about any commonly kept fish IMO.

Most Blenny's and gobys will need sand.

You should get a pair of Cross hatch triggers. I also love look of anthias schooling in a tank. And if you got the size get the tangs i think it makes a LG reef complete.

***?

I would have to hire a security guard to watch that thing all day long to make sure nothing happened to it.

Good lord.

Who buys a fish like this? You would have to poop $100 bills to afford this.

Copperband butterflies mow Aiptasia if you can find a healthy one. Beautiful fish to boot. Other fish in my tank are Powder Blue Tang, Yellow Watchman-Pistol shrimp pair, Mandarin, Kole Tang, Bi-Color Blenny. John

antipasta lol.

you have a big enough tank, get a few tangs. blue, yellow, naso, powder brown.... I think you should be able to easily keep 3-4 differen't ones.

You said above that you know what you want. How about sharing your idea and see what others think of it. If I had a bare tank that size I would be looking at 3 types of tang, anthias school (after about 1 year), a couple mandarin gobies (after a year), Blue throat trigger (I can't afford crosshatches), a couple pairs of clownfish, a school of chromis, a bright colored reef safe wrasse. Ah the list goes on...

A school of anthias would be cool, 6 or 7 females and 1 male.
Mated pair of blue throat triggers.
Mated pair of mandarins.
Some interesting wrasses, like a male flasher wrasse with a few females

Edit: OK, I just looked above and saw I pretty much duplicated Atticus's list. I guess we think alike.
