Ok. I bought a 60 gallon Marineland and in 30 days it was leaking. Marineland is refunding anf repairing damages ( they are amazing) in a rush. Found a 110 gall tank and tons of stuff. $300. Couodnt of wrong. Ita nice. It came with so many things. What do I need and don't need.

40 gallon Oceanic reef ready sump. Tons go different pumps. A CPR hang on Large refugium. AquaC ev180 protein skimmer and waste container. A reactor as well. Hydor2 wave machine. A tone of jets.

Can I put sump in my basement wash room right below tank. 8ft vertical hieght change? Then I would be able to have a lab down there with water and drains. And have less mess up here. Or do I go with hang on back refugium. I down the toad want to do coral. But I need to walk before I run. Just sticking with fish for now. Thanks guys.

No one "needs" a skimmer or a fuge or a sump..
All are optional equipment..
One can be very successful without any of that..


As for putting a sump in your basement..Sure you can but you need a pump capable of supplying the needed flow with 8+ feet of head not including plumbing resistance,etc...

I am a steamfitter. So the pipping end for me wouldn't be hard. A recommended pump would be appreciated. I would need some sort of filtration. And do not want to run my emperor 400. Its only mwnt for up to 75 gallons. Just figure. Water change and so forth would be better to do from my basement. Would be cleaner looking too

It is not uncommon to have your sump below your tank in a basement. However your pump has to be rated to push the water through the system. You give no info on the pump. Looking at the pictures I would not use that pump. I would invest in a good, powerful pump. The gallon per hour the pump can flow is reduced by many factors such as pipe size, the number of pipe turns, the distance the water travels up, reactors to name a few. Alot of research needs to be done. Use the hang on back to start. There is a wealth of knowledge on the internet to help you become successful with your tank. Good luck.

No you don't..

This is all that you need to be successful in this hobby..
1)tank filled with saltwater
2)rocks (typically 1.5-2lbs per gallon.. less if really porous )
3)powerheads for flow of about 30x display tank size to start in GPH (gallons per hour)

Depending on the room ambient you may need heaters too..
All else is optional...

Thats it.. One can absolutely have a tank with just that and be successful..

Mechanical filtration is only about clearing up the water should you have lots of particulates floating around and don't like to look at it..
Anything we concern ourselves with in this hobby will not be helped by mechanical filtration... It does nothing to reduce nitrates nor phosphates not can it replenish alk/cal/mag,etc...

Just came back with A Jabeo dcb 10000. For 10 ft of head pressure. Through 1" pvc. You guys are a big help.

I am going to hang the refugium off the sump in basement. And got a hang in back u siphon for return to sump. How deep should I make my discharge into big tank be from bottom.

huh?

Are you asking where you should put the bulkhead in the display tank that the return line (water from sump back to display tank) goes?

If so it should be near the top and you need to ensure you have multiple anti-siphon holes to prevent it backfeeding when the power goes out..
Basically you want to have it start sucking air rather quickly after power goes out and the display tank water starts to drain back into the sump to break the siphon that will form..
In the old days people would just use a check valve but they are prone to failure/clogging,etc... so anti-siphon holes are typically used now.. That or just have the return just barely under the normal water level so it will expose itself and stop the siphon almost instantly..

I see what you mean about the holes. I might have a pvc check valve in my garage. But the holes is a good idea. Easier. I have a hang in the back 2 hose tank. But was just being cautious I put my pump discharge deep enough into tank. I did see the nozzles peopke use in pictures. I'm running 1" clear tube through my floors to back of tank. And the pump discharge will be clear tube up to the tank. Then 1" pvc over the tank wall and into the tank. And I will now drill a hole an inch below water line for vacuum break.


Next problem is my hang on refugium. I want to put it in basement with sump tank. Its a CPR hang on back large. And I have the AquaC protein Skimmer. What order do I pipe them. And where do i? Every one I see has an in tank refugium. Do I cut glass and make an extra baffle in tank for refugium? Or can I just use hang on back ?

You might want to consider regular hard PVC coming up through your floors and into the tank. Clear PVC will let light in and cause algae to grow in your pipes eventually blocking off the returns.

Or if your stuck on flexible PVC, look into spaflex or ultraflex. It can be glued right into regular PVC fittings using regular PVC glue, which eliminates the barb fittings used in flexible lines which reduce flow and increase head pressure dramatically.

What of my hoses are in the dark. ? I dont plan on any light hitting them. I will havr to Google the other hoses. Home depot probably wouldnt have it. But for short time ill have to use clear until I can get it in

Ambient lighting is enough to allow algae to grow. Through your floor, no light will not hit them. but from the refugium/sump to the floor will be exposed, and from the floor to the display will also be exposed.


And yes HD and Lowes both carry spaflex. Any pool store will most likely carry both.

Did not realize that. Will have to head to pool supply. My HD is a joke. I will be honest.

One thing that bothers me is the fear of a power outage now. Noreaster knocked my power out. Been on generator 4 days. Won't have it back on until the 9th. Starting to regret the hang on back drain I bought. Any recommendations to make sure it gets siphon action again ? I'm losing my mind now. Looking at battery stand bys for tank now.

Drill them right at the surface or 1/4" below. 1" is too much IMO unless the sump in the basement can handle the extra water.

Drill new holes for bulkhead Adapters? My tank is already 3/4 the way filled. May be to late for that. The pic below is what I was sold att he store.

No, I was talking about the 1/4" holes in the return line to break the siphon when the pump shuts off. As for that overflow, I have the Eshopps one with the single drain on my tank.
