today when feeding my angler he came up out of the water momentarily in anticipation of getting food. anyways when he tried to float back down he had to struggle and forfully swim down to get to the bottom. he is now able to keep himself down but you can see him struggle a bit to keep from floating up when free swimming. he isnt stressed at all as he is shaking his lure and everything. he even ate some food after. please help me . i need to know if i should do something to help him or will he be able to slowly dissapate the air? any ideas please!!! thank you sooo much!

Ive heard of gently rubbing a puffers "bladder" or belly to relieve the air bubble when I had a similiar problem with a fish only tank, but I wouldnt know about the angler.... anyone???

yea i have heard of this too but i tried it and did not get anywhere....i do not know the technique so maybe i was doing it wrong?

Well, it really implies to hold the fish upright, or vertical, then rub gently under the bladder to some what "burp" (lack of a better descriptor) him so that you see the bubble exit the mouth. This is an extreme exercise that can really stress him out even further. You may want to wait and see if it passes naturally before attempting.

ok how long should i wait for it to pass naturally.
p.s. thanks alot for your help your making me feel better about my prized shaggy angler. i love him sooo much. lol

they are a sweet yet ugly looking fish that only a parent could love!!! LOL! I actually plan on owning one in the near future.

I would carefully observe him for a couple hours... he should be ok if he was still able to eat. How long ago did it happen?

I had a puffer that took 24 hours or so before he released an air pocket, but this could be different with an angler.

ok i called live aquaria and they gave me great advise. they told me to boil a pea . then peel it and feed it to the angler. this will aid in expelling all gases/air. im gonna try it now....i gotta go to price shopper to get some peas now!lol. hope this works! ill let you guys know.

just fed him a boiled peeled pea with a peice of krill . i guess byu tommarow i should see improvements depending on the size of the air bubble and the position it is in the belly i may have to give hime more if i dont see an improvement. ill keep you guys updated. thanks

yeah thats what im saying hes a pig. i ussually only feed hime every other day. the next day after a feeding is spent "fishing" all day cause hes hungry. he patrols the entire tank over and over again with his fuzzy feather duster looking lure. on feeding day he gets a few silver sides and frozen fresh krill. enough to make his belly a bit swollen looking. so hes getting plenty to eat hes just a pig. i hope this pea thing works. i called them back for some more answers and someone told me that most of the time this works so it should be successful.....i hope.

IT WORKED!!!!!!!! he is no longer fighting a upward force and is happily resting at the bottom. what i did was give him 2 boiled peeled peas with krill for taste. last night i noticed him a bit stressed but it appeared like he was shifting the contents of his stomach as it was visually periodically moving(his belly that is). it was shifting side to side and blowing up a bit. now he is BACK TO NORMAL! he must of farted it out!LOL. he is fishing right now but im gonna let his belly rest and feed him tommarow.

funny to hear this problem because my niger swallows air all of the time then i'd see air bubbles coming out of his bum all of the time, i think it's hilarious.
