Help my fish are struggling!

Just out of curiosity, how would an overflowing skimmer affect salinity? Presumably any salt removed through fractionation would be returned to the water column having a net effect of zero on salinity.

Not if you have it plumbed down a drain or into a bucket. In that case your ato keeps adding pure water for the net result of your salinity going down

I hadn't thought of that.

He has a 35G tank. If we assume he started at 1.025, he'd need to replace 20G with ATO fresh water to get the SG down to 1.010 and even that shouldn't kill fish.

I think a more plausible theory is that his test equipment / method is off.
