Help my lighting fell into my tank!

Borchers

Reefer Who needs Help!!!
So I was at work and my youngest Daughter calls me. "Dad your lights fell into your tank". What the heck. She follows it up with one of the LED bars fell into the tank. "Dad the LED is still on and smoking under water" I tell her to unplug the lights completely from the power bars. Well I was at work the whole time. Now that was at 0945hrs this morning it's now. 2015hrs. My corals are very ****ed off. My Stylo looks like hell and every polyp is sucked in further then I thought it could do. My Z&P are half closed and my SPS is pale and slightly sliming. The polyps are out somewhat and the Millie's look ok. So please tell me it's going to be alright. I seriously can't take another mass die off. If I do the tank is gone and I'm out of the hobby for a long time. What should I do???

Water changes
Carbon
Wet skimming
More flow
Lights out for a few days

Help.

I've had that call myself :eek2:

Aside from unplugging and getting them out of the water, which I assume you already did, a good water change, fresh carbon and a polyfilter should deal with any metal ions that might have ended up in the water.

Yes Kids and electricity do not mix at all. She's 13 and pretty smart. She turned off the main power to the entire system and shut it all down before doing anything. It's just 1 push of a button and it's all out.

Update...........
Did a WC last night, new carbon, WC set for Sunday. I've been gone all day so I just got home and !!!! It all looks very good. SPS a little pale but none the worse. They all have nice polyp extension, no flesh missing. Miles and Stylo look good. All Z&P look perfect and show no ill effects. Fish still fat and hungry. Clam open and still responding to shadows over the tank. The only goner is a SPS that was barley holding on. The LEDs are toast. The full 12 bank is gone but the driver is good. Checked all power outlets. No issues. I'm counting my stars and I'm glad my daughter was not injured. Her quick thinking saved the day. Total time in the water less then 2 minutes.

Borchers,
Sorry to hear that! Thank God no one was hurt,or the house burned down!!!! Now THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION: WHY or HOW did it fall into the tank????

Everything is plugged into a HD Powerbar, the lights are powered by an Apex system. The HD powerbar is rated and GFCI protected. The Apex is plugged into that. It's rated at 4000 watts. Plus the Apex is rated to act as a GFCI outlet as well. So I was to understand. Am I wrong?

My lighting is suspended in the air by 2 125lbs rated sunlight supply ratchet lines. This is secured to a 1/2 inche steel bar ( painted and coated ). I run an ATI 6 bulb fixture with 2 24 inche LED heat sinks attached to each side of the fixture using industrial Velcro..45 lbs pull weight or more. They were holding fine...so I thought. The one that fell came away from the fixture. When I got home to fix everything I pulled the second strip off. It took both hands and my wife to remove it. Not sure why the other fell. It was a clean strip, let set for 24 hrs. It's like construction Velcro.

Now I'm having a hood built to cover my system and I will be mounting the LED to the hood with screws and plumbers tape. It won't fall again.

As for my Daughter she was perfect.

Geez man, you hung an electric appliance over your reef with Velcro? I wouldn't be able to sleep at night with a setup like that. Screws or wires, zip ties at the least. Glad it worked out for you, however.

Sounds like the heat from your ATI fixture softened the grip on the adhesive on the Velcro strip attached to it.

i have an ip camera that i have under my tank to watch my sump, i did the velcro thing for about a day, until i looked at the camera and noticed that it was hanging sideways. luckily i was home and checked it, it was hanging on by a thread. luckily it didn't fall into the tank or i would of been out a lot. velcro, as i've learned, does not hold up with the water evaporation. do yourself a favor and screw everything in. its worth it in the long run. glad nothing drastically bad happened!

It's all going to mounted to my new hood. It's going to screwed in. The LED only weighed 2 pounds. The Velcro was rated at 45 lbs pull weight. I don't know? Well I've learned and now will be moving forward.
