HELP!!! My sump is leaking!!!

It has had a very slow leak since I set it up 2 months ago--just a trickle. Someone slid it around when it was full of water when I was still dinking around with it. Last night I noticed it was oozing and I shut it down and got 99% of the water out. I reconfigured the system so that my ocellaris and six-line would be fine with just the bare bones operating. Now I got to take out everything from it and take out the sump and then what? anyone have this problem? I think all the seams should be sealed with something: acrylic cement? silicone rubber? bathroom caulk? It's acrylic. An Aqua Clear Pro 75. I think I'll have a pro do it. I don't have the dexterity for such detailed work or the experience. Hope all goes well.

Don't mess around with a leaky sump. Pull it out and replace it. You can try to fix it later and use it as a quartine tank.

As Rick wrote, run a good bead around all the joints with Weldon-16 and you'll be fine. Make sure the acrylic sump is absolutely dry first. Alcohol is a good cleaning and drying agent for this.

as saltz and rick said. weldon #16 is your stuff. clean and dry everything. and lay a good bead in the seams. #16 is thick and can be used like silicone...to lay a bead inside the seams on teh sump. let it dry a day and you are back in biz!

I can't afford to replace it and I don't have to worry about filtration issues while it's pulled b/c I only have 2 small fish and no corals yet.

your local window glass shop might have some.

otherwise try usplastics.com or a few other places of taht nature

i have heard that alcohol can be very bad for acrylic does anyone know anything about that? i work at a LFS and one of the newb employees wrote on the acrylic with permanent pen to price some corals....we were gonna clean it off with alcohol until the owner of 25 years saw us...has anyone else heard that?

I have a thread on the DIY forum about alcohol and acrylic. I started it before you guys posted here about it. Some say yes and some say no. I think I'll stay on the safe side.

Your safe with pure alcohol. The problem with dentaured alcohol is that they sometimes use acetone to denature it. And acetone is definitely not acrylic safe.

I beleive it's called hazing.

Most plastics shops in the phone book carry Weld-on 16. I get it locally for 4 dollars a tube, but you can order it online here.

I just did a search on google for WeldOn #16 and got sidetracked on an Australian website: ozreef.org. They have a lot of diy stuff. They said isopropyl alcohol is good for preping acrylic before glueing.
