help needed on AC3

acer

New member
Purchased a used AC3 a month ago - cannot get this to hook up in my home network. I think I am doing it correctly - but cannot get the laptop or the desktop to find the IP of the unit so that I can set it up for my tank. It may be my home router network security or something else that I cannot figure out.

Anybody with knowledge/experience on this unit please PM and I will call you for verbal help or arrange a time for you to come over for free beer/food so you can try in person..

Thanks

Ted

I tired restart several times- but I don't think I have figured out how to put back to factory settings. The DHCA ( supposed to set its own IP address), going by memory as I am at work now but I think that is what it is called , does not seems to work - so I switched it off and I am manually setting the IP address = 192.168.000.XXX. The last three (xxx) numbers are the only numbers you change correct? Then you type in the IP that you put in the AC3 manually into your web browser - correct? I am thinking it is a netmask, a DNS, or gateway setting problem.... I tried hooking it directly thru the Ethernet cable to a laptop that is hooked up to my home network via WI-Fi, and I tired directly Ethernet into my router neither the laptop or the desktop found the IP address in the browser. I do get both the yellow and the Green lights to show up. I think I am doing it right -" per- se" - but obviously missing something. Should the DNS, Gateway , and NETMASK settings be the same as my home network? The home network setting I find via the typing of cmd and the ipconfig/all into the windows? However, there are several setting that come up when I do the IPconfig thing- maybe one set of settings is for the PC or laptop that I tested and the other set is for the network/router. Which do I use?

Gateway should be the ip address of the router. Netmask should be 225.225.225.0 and the dns should be whatever it is on your pc. Also make sure you are using the right port. Sometimes you have to include the port number in the address. For example mine ports to 7654 so the address looks like ht tp://192.168. 1.50:7654

AC3's PORT = 80 - that is factory settings I believe. So an example IP could be

192.168.0.110:80 ?

Give it a try. Port 80 is usually the default http port so your router should handle it by itself for 80 but it would be worth a try if something might be set different in the router.

Fail!!!! Trying on my laptop which is hooked into the home network via wireless connection. The AC3 is hooked to the laptop with the ethernet cable. IPconfig on the laptop brings up two groups of IPv4 addresses and subnet masks . The first group is a Wireless LAN adapter wireless network connection . The second is a Ethernet adapter local area connection. So, which do I use?? The Ethernet group has no numbers after listing the gateway.

Ted, try posting on the neptune forum, those guys have great customer service, plus there are probably a lot of others on that forum also.

If the AC3 is hooked directly to the laptop then the gateway has to be set to the laptop. It will work best if you hook them both to the router. Then the gateway is the router ip usually 168.192.1.1. You might also have to forward the port on the router. Google port forwarding and the name of your router for instructions. You have to forward the port number selected on the AC3 internet setup to the ip address of the AC3.

Yeah - success with getting hooked up- now the fun begins with the programming. I finally figured out that .1 means .001 not .100 - ya I know "duh". Obviously, I don't have a programmers mind- along with being a 50 y.o. and always in a hurry = too busy. I was getting pretty irritated.

calibrated new PH probe. What the heck does an ORP probe do for you anyhow? the temp probe is 1.5 degrees off. SO, probably need to purchase one of those. Starting to read about the DC8 stuff and the lunar lights.

ORP is oxidation reduction potential. It does two things. If you use ozone, it tells you when you've gone far enough. If you don't run ozone, it can be used as a general measure of water cleanliness, but isn't really necessary to have.

If you know what you're doing, you can use the ORP jack to run a second pH probe, or even an ISE. All it is in reality is a millivolt meter.

Thanks Disc!- unless I have a ozone setup I have pretty much learned that ORP doesn't do much for you. Will be calibrating temp probe tonight- hope to program a DC8 outlet for a fan to turn on if temps go above 81 Degrees.

Good luck. Be sure to look through the default timer names. You may have to change or delete some of them. If one outlet has two timer names it can cause funny things to happen. I had a fan for a while on an outlet that had been used as a heater before and for two days the fan came on for 5 seconds every minute.

Once you got it hooked to the net, its pretty easy to see from the web interface.

One other thing to remember about a dc8 that they don't tell you is about outlets 4 and 8. You should look it up because I think its different on different models. But on mine 4 and 8 are relay driven instead of triac driven. Triacs can fail open, and also sometimes don't turn off small inductive loads like an ato pump. So 4 and 8 should be used for those things.

Funny but the ONLY X10 I have ever used was back in 1978, when my dad purchased the Sears Home Control System. It was the first generation X10. We had maybe 2 lamp modules and 2 light switch modules and the control console.

It is the system on the right, linked below :)
