Help! New fish swims into glass

I just added a Powder Blue Tang (acclimated properly) and he acts like he is blind! He keeps swimming into the glass and rocks. Is something wrong with him?

You need a bigger tank. They swim for miles in the ocean, so consider something at least a mile long, but that is calling it close.

Give him a while to get used to the surroundings. Mine sees his reflection and tries to attack it. BTW be prepared for him/her to become the dominate fish.

When i first added mine he paced the tank alot. Swimming rapidly back and forth. Darting through the open caves i have created. Learning his surroundings, will calm giving sometime-couple days.

200 gal tank is plenty of space you have no problems there.

Thanks Lakeside518. He looks a little thin too. I added some food for him but I am sure it will take some time before he decides to eat. He's hanging out in the back of the tank now.

It all depends.. Mine eat the 1st day. Mysis and blood worms are some of his fav's along with leaf or romaine lettuce. Mine does not seem to like color bits.

I have in a 90 gal FOWR and will be moving into a new 150 gall RR setup as it is cycling now. My PB tang is 5" or so

I actually bought a powder blue tang that was blind, without knowing it until I got it home. Mine did the same thing, and he ended up dying on me since it couldnt find food.

Our PB tang defin gets spoiled one of the main center pieces in the tank. They defin do need some swim space hense the upgrade. Will also feed off the LR in your tank as does mine.

Just watch behavior closely and appearence!.. They are easily proned to Ich esp. if stressed. I use a UV light. I have successfuly treated him for Ich once since i have had him. Early treatment is important as always.

I run a UV sterilizer as well for 9 hrs. When I was floating the bag my lights came on. Do you think that might have blinded him? Hopefully it is only temporary. I waved my scraper in front of him to see if he would react and there was no reaction. Most fish will run off. I'll try a net and see what he does with that.

I couldn't reach him with the net so I tried the scraper again and I think I got a reaction. I will see how he does through the night.

Give him some time. New surroundings will stress them out. PBT's are very hardy in my experience. Try flake or nori on a clip, he will fatten up in no time. Don't be suprised if it takes a couple days for him to come around to his new home.

im with everyone else. mine slowly followed my Coral Beauty around the tank. he would follow the CB in and out of all the holes and caves. then about 30 min later he was wide open in and out, bumping in the glass, attacking his reflection, chasing the CB around the tank. i though he was going to kill himself by running in the rocks LOL. now about every morning when the lights come on he does about 3-4 laps around the tank near full speed, then hes ready to be fed :D.

i feed mine Seaweed Selects (algae strips) on a clip, frozen Mysis Shrimp, Frozen Plankton, formula 2, and Prime Reef Flakes. not all at once of course :D

Update-- He still hangs out in the back of the tank. I haven't noticed him bumping into things as much though. He still has not taken any food from the veggie clip. I will try and target feed him tonight.

Ok, I have tried Seaweed Salad, ON Prime Reef Pellets, ON Marine One Flake, ON Brine Shrimp Plus (frozen), and ON Formula Two (frozen) with no luck. It's been48 hours now. Most fish scatter when you put a net or anything in the tank, this one will let me grab him with the Aqua Tongs. Should I still be worried? What other foods can I try?

he looks really emaciated. see how he is pinched in behind his skull? and how pinched in his tummy is? you bought and ethiopian lemon. my reccomendation is call your lfs and see if theyar ewilling to honor a credit. idealy it would be nice if they would still give you a shot to get him to eat (although at this stage he is already deteriorating his organs) but give you a credit if he dies.
this happens alot in the saltwater world, and is sort of the dark side of the hobby. very few fish adapt well to captivity. i see it all the time with puffers with "stuck in a box syndrome" it breaks their little brains to be stuck in glass cages. either the suck it up, learn to adapt and become well adjusted little fishy citizens, or they become highly neurotic, panicky, and starve to death or jump out. it sucks but it is true.
your best bet is to keep the tank lights dim, water parameters high, and quit grabbing him with the dang tongs! feed the tank mates as you normally do, and offer nori rubberbanded to a rock not an algae clip. you can try garlic, but i havent had much success witha fish this emaciated. if you do get him eating, try soaked mysis in metronitazole to get rid of all those nasty internal paracites.
and pleas next time you go to the fish store, LOOK CLOSELY athte fish you are purchasing, find out how long it has been in the store, what it is eating, and NEVER BUY A FISH THAT IS NOT EATING! you must see with your own eyes that fish enthousiastically go after food before putting a dime on it. i hope you dont lose him, good luck

He'll make it! Just give the fish some time as I'm sure he'll stop asking for headaches with the glass. It's not like I've been exempt from banging into things a few times. Don't add any more fish for a while. That will push him over the top of your tank.

Hmmm, if you can grab him w/ tongs, he's unfortunately probably not going to make it. It would have been a good idea to quarantine this fish [all fish] because they are so prone to ich and to let him adjust and recover .And although some people have luck w/ PBT, they are really delicate fish and many don't adapt and die. If you have a quarantine, you may want to move him before he goes behind your rockwork and you can't get to him
I have a Gold Rim Tang,[same genes] and he did not eat for a couple of days. He swam back and forth , hitting himself on the glass...then ich:rolleyes: I have had him in hypo for 3 1/2 weeks and he has done very well and is getting quite plump. I hope yours makes it. They are IMO the most beautiful Tangs, the most beautiful fish. I saw 2 in my LFS yesterday, never seen them in person...I had to drag myself out of their before I bought one!

Well I hope your little guy is still alive, do keep trying to feed him and hopefully he'll make it

Good news! This morning his behavior has changed for the better I think. He seems a little more aware of where things are in the tank. I put some pellets around him and tried to, or took a coulple. The lights have not came on yet so he might have a hard time finding them.
