HELP...New Sand Bad?

i put a new bag of sand in my tank, the CaribSea Aragonite crushed coral sand... "dead sand" i assume...but now my water is cloudy... i didnt expect this to happen... will this effect my fish? is this harmful?

Did you rinse it first?

i only added 1 cup... not whole tank is milky... only slightly... i didnt rinse that 1 cup... its not mega milk... actually its almost gone...

but for the rest of the sand... should i do a FW rinse then rinse with salt before i add it to the tank?

always rinse dry sand.

Rinse it a few times with RO and you can add from there. Even then, the tank may get a little cloudy.

I know I didn't rinse mine and I just let my skimmer do the job of rinsing it for me! Lazy yes...

thx guys... i rinsed with tap water WELL... then RO + dechlorinated with the RO... then another rince with 1/2 RO and 1/2 salt... pretty clear noww... i will add after dinner... hope all is well

if you rinse, you will loose the benficial fine grains down the drain.
the fine grains and silt is beneficial to micorfauna that will eventually populate your sand bed.

already rinsed... the water was still super milky even AFTER a super rinse job... so, shud i still have some bacteria? it was only dry crushed coral... fine crushed

if it was dry, then no bacteria to begin with.
the milkyness will go away in a few days once particles get coated with biofilm of bacteria already in your tank.

alot of dry sands on the market do still have bacteria.Do you still have the bag?What do the instructions say, rinsing it shouldnt affect it.the cloudiness should go away over night, it might make your skimmer go crazy for a little bit.dont trip your fish will be cool.

i have the same substrate and it says on the bag to only lightly rinse it as you want all the good stuff (calcium etc) to buffer the water. i think this substrate slowly dissolves over time.
mine was cloudy for 2 days.

mine was cloudy for 2 also... cleared up nicely tho
