HELP ON 125 New Set Up

I just bought a used 125 Gals tank and need help.

1) Two overflows - Do I need 2 motors and how big should I get(9.5 Mag?) or just connect the two returns, put a Y connection and get 1 big Mag.

2) The return pipe I got has plastic balls that goes up and down and not a Durso type. Will this create a noise problem. I am planning to put the sump at the basement.

Thanks Angelo

not that I have enought experience to answer your questions. But I can ask a question that will help someone else answer it. You said your sump is going to be in the basement. Does that mean that your display tank is going to be on the next floor up? If this is the case, you will need to be concerned about head pressure and make sure you pick a pump that can deliver as high as you want with the flow rate you want. Also, any elbows and splits you have in the ouput of your return pump will also decrease max head height. If your sump is in the basment and your display is one tank up. The mag 9.5 wouldn't have enough head pressure to return the water to the display tank. The 9.5 has a max distance at 14' and this would be without using any enbows or splits. - this is my understanding....

You wouldn't need 2 return pumps if you are using one one sump. your return pump woudn't know if the water came rom one over flow box or two overflow boxes.

Hey Angelo, salreus is right, you don't need 2 pumps but you are gonna need a bigger pump! One that is pressure rated.

I am not familiar with this type of return pipe, and it sounds like it has the potential to become noisy... might be worth investing in a Durso type standpipe.

Thanks guys

I just ordered the parts from Jack so that it will be a Durso type of return. I like to use Mag pump because it is inside the sump and no spilling of water in case something goes wrong. I am afraid the dry pumps . Please tell me the pro & cons of this pumps.
I am also going to buy the big container and use this as my sump.

typically a submersible pump is not going to be strong enough to pump back up to the tank from the basement.

I think you'd be better off placing the sump inside your stand. Is your stand closed or does it have an open bottom?

going with the durso is a good move :)

Also, the more things you have in the water that generates heat, the more heat you have in the water....I know, how obvious. This might be a concern depending on what lighting you also get and how close that lighting is to the water. I chose to use an external pump for my set up as well as an external skimmer because I have 1200 watts of lighting and knew the temp would be a problem and I had/have no desire to purchase a chiller. After my lights are left on my tank for 12 hours, my temp water is about 81. not sure how much higher it would be if I didn't use external pumps. And I don't currently use a fan on my sump. If I have temp problems when summer comes, I will use a fan. But really, since my basement is much cooler in the summer than the upstairs, I doubt I will ever need a chiller or a pump. Just price a chiller for a 125+ tank and you will quickly see why I paid the extra few bucks to use external pumps.

You make me a believer Salreus. I will try to buy a external pump. My stand is close at the bottom but that is no problem since I could just make a hole and also I am thinking about future improvement that is why it will be in the basement. I will also be looking for T5 lighting. Tomorow I will be travelling to Canada to set the 125Gals, then at the end of month I will be transfering the corals from my 75Gals to it. Thanks a lot for the info.

Sorry to Highjack your thread Angel, but this may help you out as well.

I am in the planning stages of a new 120 RR set up. I was looking at external pumps since I do not have a basement. I was looking at the Little Giant 4-MDQX-SC, 1/10hp, 145W, 1.3A, 17.0ft, 7.40PSI, 1.00" FNPT/1.0" MNPT with 1080 gph @6ft. I was planning on Wye the pump to the two returns. Do you think this will be enough flow? What is everyoneââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s take on the Little Giant pumps?

Thanks

I think it would be plenty of flow because i assume you are not using the return as your only method of water movement. It is to my understand that the turn over rate of your tank deals more with the water movement within the display tank not the turn over rate between the display tank and sump. What other if any forms of water movement are you planning on using within your tank? What kind of tank are you setting up.

I plan on using Seio's or MaxiJets for additional water movement until i can afford Tunze or the new vortec system. was thinking about a closed loop system but kinda working on a budget right now for this upgrade. BTW it will be a mixed reef tank.
thanks

Just curious....

Where exactly are the holes in your tank for your overflow and returns..

Mine is on the Bottom bought a Reef Ready tank.

The way my 125 AGA RR is plumbed is both drains T into the same line and dump into the Refugium at the same end my Protein Skimmer is in. The Return line off the return pump at the other end of the refugium also T off the same line. There are also Ball Valves on each side. Both the Return lines are pointed towards the surface about 2" under water.
Then I have a CLS with 9 ports hidden inside the rock work(for the most part). The ports run in series of two with the exception of the center one which is by it self. Each line has a Ball valve on it so I can adjust the flow on any of them at any give time. The CLS is run by a Dolphin Amp Master pump.
All plumbing inside the tank is 3/4" and 1" outside the tank. I also have a Ball Valve on both in and out of the CLS pump. The suction line comes up and over the back of the tank and is set at the mid level of the tank.
See this thread for my filtration set up for my 240 that I will be up-grading to very soon. Caveman's 240 Project

Thanks Jason. I did set it up in a temp. place since my son will still put some tiles this coming weeks. I did put some water, ready mixed and put the sand and live rocks from my 46 Gals. It is almost 1/2 the tank, just to aged the water.

I am looking for a barracuda pump 4500GP. Will this be good for both the 75Gals. & 125 Gals. combined?

ASM G3 25" 5000 Skimmer

Ocean Light MH T5 combos

These items are from Salty Criters. I hope I don't pay tax and it will be pick up.

Could I call you for other advice?

Thanks Angelo

Yep Guys, I will be moving to Canada at the end of the month. We already sold our house and made a dry run last week to set up a 125 Gals. tank I bought.

I will be still member of your Group. You Guys were all very helpfull when I started my tank 1 1/2 years ago and even now I am still receiving advise. Never seen so many nice guys, always helpful to newbies like me. Hope to be back here for the swap this September. I will always be looking to the best forum here in RC.
