At least get a copy of Photoshop Elemtents. There are printers that come bundled with it at Staples.
I use the Canon i900D printer, and it is acceptable, although I will be upgrading to the wide format version soon.
Adobe Lightroom is another application that only adjusts lighting, contrast, shadow level, etc. . .it is developed for people who only need to adjust ni the image, and not play with adding layers. You should look into that as well.
If the camera takes images in RAW format, then only shoot in RAW. You will have more control over the image in post processing than if you use JPEG. The files are much larger, but you have a 4 gig card. . .
