Something happened to my CS4.When I open a raw image now the reds are just red pixels or boxes on the brightest parts of the shot.I Need to move exposure slider real low to get them to disappear.

But when I save it to try to post a pic here(to get help) it looks normal.I assumed it was a prob with the D40 but now I think it is something with photoshop.TIA for any help or suggestions

On the top corners of the histogram (which is on the top right of your RAW editor), you'll see two triangles. When you click on the left triangle, it turns on/off your shadow clipping indicator. The right triangle is for highlight clipping. A white box will appear around the triangle when that feature is on. When they are on, clipped/blown-out highlights and shadows will show up as red or blue respectively on your image. This is just an indicator and doesn't affect the actual image, which is why they don't appear in the final image. If you're getting a lot of red (i.e. blown out highlights) on your image, try moving the "recovery" slider to the right. If you're getting areas of blue (i.e. clipped shadows), try moving the "shadow" slider to the left.

Ah ! Thank you,I did mess with these and a few other buttons that I never used before and mistakenly stumbled on the fix. With your great explanation I will be able to try another feature I haven't experimented with much, the recovery slider,.I am learning every time I play with this software.

Play and learn! And don't forget to post. :)

I find the highlight clipping warnings useful. Lets me see easily where the shot is overexposed. And the red does not transfer to the imported shot. It's just a visual aid during import.

Yes,thats what blew my mind.I was seeing it on PS but not on the LCD of the camera and I was really concerned there was a problem with the camera or lens.I was shooting from a photo box before this issue and I thought I may have gotten some water or moisture in the body of something like that. Thanks for the help understanding that function. Here is a shot that I thought had some decent quality.Still a infant with a slr and PS
