Tank parameters are perfect. There have been no fluctuations in chemistry or temp.

30% water change done 10 days ago, along with replacing the Chemipure bag. No changes in dosing or feeding.

All other fish in tank are fine so far.

Fish has been more reclusive and shy than usual for several weeks. I was actually wondering about a week ago if I had lost it because I had not seen it at all.

Yesterday it was out, but seemed to be lethargic and swimming a little erratically. I could not catch it before it disappeared into the sand again.

Today it is out and laying on top of the sand breathing rapidly.

Fins and body in good condition. Not skinny. No strange films, wounds or speckles. Eyes are regular and clear. Color is normal.

I have never had disease of any kind in my tank before so I am not sure what to do to treat this, or what it might even be.

HELP PLEASE!

FWIW & IMO ( for an old geezer, I'm sure getting good at semi-acronyms!) Its not unusual for fish to die and never give us a hint as to why. IMO, its better to just keep quiet than toss up the standard, "maybe it was air freshener" type responses. I'm amazed at how far we've come with diseases, parasites, infections, etc. But many deaths are still a mystery.
