Help! Pump for large skimmer?

I posted this in the lighting and filtration forum but didn't get any help so I though this forum might be better. I have a Euro reef 12-48 body (12" diameter 48" tall) that the bottom was busted.

One of my buddies works in a machine shop that can cut the busted bottom off and replace it with PVC and then redrill holes where needed. I don't have a pump for the skimmer and was thinking of using Reeflo ORCA Needle Wheel Water Pump. http://www.aquacave.com/detail.aspx?ID=1348 I would like to stay in this price range. Is this a good option for this skimmer body? Do you recommend any other pumps? It will be running on my mixed reef with 450-500g total water volume.

I Reeflo ORCA pump is a good choice but the only potential problem you may encounter with it is turbulance inside the skimmer body. But you can always experiment with it since you don't have a bubble plate diffuser to eliminate the turbulance. I have seen skimmers using the ORCA pump without a bubble plate diffuser so it may work out well for you.

that is a cs12-4 skimmer (i think...)

CS 12-4 - 12 in diameter | 4 ft tall | Ideal for up to 600 gal | 24" x 24" footprint | 4 x 9000 Sedra pumps $1,598.00

i think you would be fine cutting off the bottom, but you should build a box and glue the tube to the box.

Look at the Reeflo 200 and reeflo 250 skimmers. MRC Orca skimmers as well as some other people.

the box on bottom can house the bubble plate as well, it would be easier to attach the pump to.

Problem 2,
The neck on that skimmer is tall which isnt a problem, but the diameter might be.
whats the diameter of that neck?

With a 48in tall boxy, you could do a Orca 3
because the body is shorter, and your going to have to cut it down, look at the Orca 2. its a 10in body where the 3 is a 12 in body. so you might be able to make a hybrid between the two.
