I just found my purple fire fish laying in its normal hole, but under closer expection found its tail fin is eaten up. I was able to get it into the Qt tank so ( it looks like the hermits are getting at it) what is my next step?

Is there a medication i should try and get? any aditive i should ad to the tank? What can i do if anything to save this beautifull fishes life!!!:uhoh2:

If the fish is healthy, the tail will grow back without taking any special measures in a week or two. Best treatment for the fish assuming it is still swimming properly and not acting lethargic is to remove the hermits from your DT and introduce the firefish back to the DT. The removal from the DT to QT was probably more stressfull than the tail nipping it received. If the firefish was having problems swimming and acting lethargic in the DT then let it recover in the QT.

I had a red firefish that went through the same thing, not sure it was a hermit though (only have one) and it has already completely healed in 10days and I introduced a tang and mandarin during his recovery, which really added some stress to the tank. The firefish never even skipped a beat with new tail growth, and it took 4 days before he would get anywhere near the tang and tank jumping was an hourly event for those 4 days.

I've had many fish recover from lost fins either due to shipping damage, fin rot or aggression and all have recovered successfully in my DT without any special care.

Good luck!

I highly doubt a hermit will do such damage to a fast moving firefish. If it resides in your 125, there is possibility other fish are harassing it.

What ever did it, i guess we will never know. Shortly after i QT the fish it died. Theres nothing worse then the loss of a new fish.
