Help setup a small frag tank.

I think I want to set up a small frag tank in my laundry room.....

Small... Not stock tank...

I have 2 20gal longs... 2 20 gal talls. A 45 tall cubish tank and 3 55gals.

The idea is to use a 20 gal long... with a aqua clear 500 for some carbon and cheato.. 2 korilia 1s for flow.... T5 lights...

Any suggestions?

If you have a larger, display system, I would recommend plumbing it into that. Much easier to maintain one system, as opposed to two.

T5's will be fine over a 20L, as that's a shallow tank.

As for the flow, that should be fine, as long as you're not trying to grow SPS.

In the 75 main display tank is not going to work. That is another design error. its packed with sump and chiller. Going to work it into the 150 design.

Im thinking no live rock no sand. with no fish and weekly water changes, do you think a sponge filter would be called for?

I wouldn't do a sponge filter, but I would absolutely recommend some "worker" fish in there, depending on the frag tank size. Maybe a sixline wrasse and a tang or a lawnmower blenny to handle any algae issues.

I think you could easily do a frag tank with a 20L and remote DSB and a little bit of rubble. Watch the params and change 2-4G a week and you're set.

I wouldn't go with a sponge/foam filter, they are ok for fish-only quarantine systems, but when you are worrying about nitrates I think they are going to be a problem.

I've got a 20L going with just an HOB filter, couple powerheads, and light for now. I'll eventually be doing a PVC overflow down into a 10g sump underneath, but I don't quite have enough time for that right now. I'm sure what you have will work to start if that's all you have to go with at first.

Monk - what do you have in the hob?

After seeing somebody's stocktank..... My brain has far too many wheels turning. That is awsome. My basement is scary though..
100 year old farm house.

Maybe I can get rid of the dining room table. and put it in front of the display. My daughter and I can eat meals in the the living room right?

Now your talking!!!

I see that there is no voice of reason in this thread. Only enablers.

It ok though, the voice in my head said explore other options.

I want to move ahead with basement sump. started gathering parts. This was just rescued.

I blame you tard. After seeing your set up the gears started to turn. Draining new tank to basement with that as a sump. Its "clean" too. no Chemicals ever in it. It was bought to hold the dollies that are in there. It just is covered in warehouse dust.

By still having a DT upstairs, Morgan can still enjoy the tank, but I can have a working area in the basement.

Still going to use the 20l as a frag tank for a little while. I need to piece a few more things together. Finding some more things. I love mid winter clean ups.

Need a Return pump (working on it). Another skimmer. A 120rr tank or nerve to drill my 150.

Wanted to post some pics of the 20 that is the temp frag tank. Working on the the big plumbed system, but needed something quick.
