Help silencing new drain

I plumbed my 30g QT tank today, and hooked it up to a 20g sump.

Anyway, It's an upturned elbow connecting to a 1" bulkhead, then a standpipe, then 1" plumbing to the sump.

I have a hole in the cap, and it wasn't cutting it. So then I ran airline tubing down the line through the hole, and it silenced it somewhat. But now the line is still purging air about every 2 minutes.

The tank is in the bedroom, and this is just not going to cut it.

Any thoughts?

hey TJ

Looks like you are having some luck with making holes in your tank!!! looks like you are burning the midnight oil to do this. did the drill work for you. looks like a nice clean hole in the tank.

Yeah I practiced a little last night, and this morning cutting about 4 holes in my spare 15g tank. They all didn't go as well though.

But I didn't crack anything... Once I learned how to control the bit, and keep it from jumping initially, it was pretty darn easy.

The drill worked great, thanks for lending it to me.

I just need to figure out how to silence to drainline now. It's WAY too loud.

turn it so it is facing down or it will suck air you may have to add a little pipe to get it a little lower.

your best bet is to build a little overflow box in that corner

Yeah I use BeanAnimal's method on my current 90g reef tank. I was hoping to get away without constructing an overflow box or placing the line under siphon.

I'm not looking for a dead silent drain, but something that is at least tolerable. Right now, it's just far far far to loud.

Someone brought it to my attention that I may need to cut the PVC that extends under the surface of the water in the sump back a little.

Fixed it... I had to slow the flow down from the return pump. The pump was pushing too much flow through the bulkhead than it was able to handle, so it was surging.
