Help! SPS color fade.

Say feeding is the issue, and I gradually increase feedings and spot feed like Breutus mentioned, what would the time frame be to see some improvement?

I would say increased feeding would show in your leather corals with in two weeks.

I like Reeferheads logic, but still think it is nutrient limitation.
I would not skim any less, or do any fewer water changes.

Have you in the last 5 months had an algae outbreak of any kind ?

The only other thing from personal experiance is that you might have too much heavey metal in your tank. Iron, or soemthing else rusting perhaps. Check your return pumps for rusty screws or hose clamps ect.

Before anything else I would feed more, and maybe switch salt brands.

I've had no algae outbreaks of any kind and I've been through all my pumps in the last month or so.

I have been thinking of switching salts though. I've not been happy with RC so I may switch back to IO. I have heard and read good things about Coralife.

What prompts you to suggest changing salt mixes?

On the softies and zoa's you'll see results in two weeks or less. but the SPS will still depend on other variables, if there is enough zooanthanle to reproduce quickly, and if there happy and stable and want to reproduce

Good luck with it all

No algae/outbreak adds a tick to the low nutrient side.

I belive salt batches especially from the same store from the same time will just compile the same salts over and over with out much of fluxuation other than consumption.

I think you might get too much of the good not enough of the bad if you know what I mean.

My motto, buy what ever is on sale. However I don't care for the oceanic salt at all. I avoid it like the plague.

Is that one ppm of nitrate or slightly more than one ppm of nitrate ? Either way that's not a drop in the bucket.

My mistake. The nitrate reading should have been >1 (Less than 1ppm)

Did you mean it is NOT a drop in the bucket or it IS a drop in the bucket? I'm thinking that it is.

I've been using RC for a little over 6 months and IO for a little over 6 months before that. I have about a 1/2 a bucket of RC left and when that is empty I'm gonna pick up some Coralife and try that for a while.

i had the same problem in the past

the tank was too clean

Chad - When you had your 58 how much were you feeding and what? I don't want to over do it but I also want my tank to thrive.

I've started adding DT's and feeding Rod's along with target feeding as well. I have Oyster eggs that I'll start this weekend. I looked for Phycopure but the LFS was out. I'm also shutting my skimmer down during feedings and for a few hours after.

during feeding the foam head should die on the skimmer

no need to shut it off

i was feeding formula one and spirulina (just enough for the fish to eat in 5 mins)

i had 4 fish in the tank

i tryed the oyster eggs and didnt notice a difference in growth

never tryed rods food

i have been feeding mysis lately mostly for my acans

I have a very similar problem with my Encrusting Purple Haze Monti. However I have the same coral in two locations, in one its fully colored and looking great. The original colony on the other hand is bleaching and looking deathly. I cant see any bugs on the coral so its probably not a nudi problem either. I plan on adding K to see if that helps.

In my case it was a combination of change from B-Ionic to the DIY 2-part. My calculations were not perfect and some corals bleached but have since recovered nicely. The other was no nutrients in the water. I began feeding more and target feeding too. My colors have gone from pale to very rich now.

Not sure what could be the problem in your case. Maybe someone else here will be able to help.
