Help Starting my 29g BC Build Thread

I know I have said it before, but a skimmer and/or GFO reactor are going to help out with your algae problem a whole bunch, and it's fairly easy to hook up either one (there are plenty of guides, pictures, etc to be found around here).

That picture looks like an aptasia anemone, you should definitely look into getting rid of it!!

I do runs skimmer but not gfo. I use chempure plus which is suppose to have gfo. I did get some large snails today and they instantly attacked the algae and it's gone.

How do I kill the aptasia?

How do I kill the aptasia?

Don't panic !
It is only one but try to get rid of it soon. I made the mistake of not getting rid of mine and now it is starting to become an issue I have dozens.

Peppermint shrimp might do the job or you could get AiptasiaX or joe's juice (I prefer the aiptasiaX)
You can also make a kalkwausser paste and apply that.

Thanks King. I like the shrimp idea but I want to make sure its a gone so I will look into the aiptasiaX. I was wondering if I could just grab it and yank it out but I found out its like a duster and disappears in its hole. I did see another one so I really need to act fast. I thought about putting epoxy over the hole but not sure that would work. Can I get the aiptasiaX anywhere?

I have 2 of these snails that bury themselves in the sand most of the time and come out whenever I feed. This guy has been above the sand now for 2 days and doesn't move much at all. Actually looks dead but when I touch it it will move a little. I haven't seen the other one in days either. Do these live a long time?

I recently purchased 3 big turbo snails because I had trouble with algae. Could they have something to do with the others not looking good? I have no idea but something doesn't seem right.

Those look like nassarius snails. They're more scavengers than algae eaters I believe. The 3 big turbos may do some damage to the algae but I read somewhere that it's generally not a good idea to keep more than one, if that, in aquariums as small as ours. That being said, I do have one!

Thanks for the tip Stang. Maybe I will take 2 out. They did a number in 30 minutes on my algae. All gone.

ON the Nassarius, do they sometimes just lay around on top of the sand. Mine never did. But now it just lays there looking dead and then I think of going to take it out and move it and it starts to move. Doesn't really go anywhere but it moves. It seems still alive but something just isn't right. I can't even find the other one.

My nassarius haven't acted like that but others have and those others always died. All of my nassarius live in the sand unless they're cruising. There were times I wouldn't see them for weeks. Check your salinity.

Thanks Stang. I am thinking it may not make it much longer. Its definitely not normal. Usually when I feed they pop up and I havent seen the other one for sometime now. I will monitor things. My salinity is 1026 and has been pretty constant at that for months.

Its been a while since my last update...so here are a few pics. Not a lot of changes. Few small additions. Main addition is the rock with all the worms on it. Not sure if a name for it but it looked cool.

I have been having one strange issue with the tank which is I cant seem to keep Zoas that well. I was told they are so easy and for some reason I have had a handfull in my tank and 3 have died off. They look good for a while then little by little a few close and then they all close and die off. Not sure why this is happening. I had some cool ones too. All perams are normal and still do a weekly water change. All other corals have been and done well too.

As others have said it's a nassarius snail. When they come up top like that and stay in one spot it means they are dying IME (I've kept TONS of these since I started my tank). They typically live quite a long time, but like anything are hit and miss. Good sand sifters and detritus eaters though, I probably have 15 small and 8-10 big ones left in my tank if I could inventory them. Throw a chunk of shrimp in there at night sometime and watch all those suckers come out and attack it!!

And for the record, I have 5 turbo's in my 28 for at least 6-mo now with no issue. I will probably have to swap them soon for smaller ones though. I actually like them, much more voracious eaters then other snails. Just get them small and plan on replacement when they get too big.

Hey Harley20 I finally got hold of some clove polyps . After I saw yours I really wanted some . Mine are not the same as your but are very cool. They are called Liam's papaya clove polyps. How are yours doing have they mutiplied?

Hey King. Nice looking polyps, I like yours better. Mine are doing well and really have filled in and multiplied. I have them on single rock in case they get out of hand. But I do like them. My Duncan is getting big also. I seem to have trouble with Zoas lasting. They seem to do ok and then little by little close up and die off. I like them but I have had 4 die off.

Thanks, I have already noticed new growth. I have had the same issues with zoas melting away ,never figured that one out!

Good to know you do also. I asked the lfs why it was happening and they just told me to check my perams and that was it. Eventhough I see some cool Zoas I will stay away from getting any new ones.
