Help, Tank Running Over 82º

All of a sudden tank temperature increased to 82..2-82.4. Took one heard out and the other is set a 74º. What could have caused this elevation. The same lights have been running for 2 months and the room temp is around around 72-74. Beginning this the temp in the tank started to raise.

I wouldn't say a temp that high is an issue, unless its a sudden swing. If you hadn't had issues before and your temperature is all of a sudden much higher, with no change in equipment, then it about has to be the heater. I've had the thermostats quite working in them before. Otherwise, things such as the pump and light can heat the tank above room temp. My house is about 70, but if I don't run cooling fans on my canopy and sump my tank will run at about 82. I also run LED's. This would be quite a bit worse with metal halide's.

Seasonal ambient rise??

Put a fan on your tank sump or surface. That will bring it down but since it can lower it by some 10 degrees, do it under observation. Rock and sand will hold heat for a while, so this will be a process. Try to keep it around 79.

My tank here at work ran at 87-88 for a couple months before I thought to check it... oops. My big clue was bleaching palys.

Watch it to keep it from going higher - pumps, lights, broken heaters, poor ventilation during warmer weather can all be responsible for rising tank temps.

If nothing has changed equipment wise, I would bet at least one of the heaters. If you are set for 74, temps are 82, your heater should be cold. If it is pretty warm or hot, then it is stuck in the ON position. If that is the case, you will either need a new heater or controller.

Thanks for the feedback. It was the ambient temperature of that room. Home thermostat read 73, but room was warmer. Closed vents and tank starting to cool down, currently 79-80
