Help the Aiptasia are Overwhelming!

The Aiptasia is officially starting to choke my corals now. Can this be lethal to them? I am seriously looking into purchasing some of the berghia nudibranch...it's getting out of hand and making the tank look hideous.

I have 3 peppermint shrimp in my 2 -10 gallon nanos. they are extremely diligent in keeping away all aptasia. I have even taken rocks from my other aquariums when I find the aptasia and place it in the tank with my shrimp and they remove it quickly, maybe I should say devour. its a much better word for it

How long did it take for you guys to clear up your problem with berghia?

I got 5 of them about 2.5 or 3 weeks ago and put them into my heavily infested 40g. I haven't seen them make a dent so far. I haven't even noticed any gone were I put 4/5, and the fifth was only a few inches away from them.

I'm a little disappointed after spending like 4 hours acclimating and transfering. I'm about 2 weeks away from buying a cbb.

I injected them about 3 or 4 per day for a while and let the pepperment shrimp take out the small ones. I won the battle a long time ago.

Actually I do, I forgot that I took pics beforehand to monitor their progress.

I will try to take some pics as of now to and post them for comparison. I dont know maybe I've just been staring at my tank for too long to make a real comparison.

I'll post those up in a bit after I take pics and transfer them to my comp.

see if that works, sorry first time posting an image on a web board and this is an embarassing one at that.

the left is the before images, the right are as of now.

Edit:

that doesn't show up to well.
This pic is in my gallery. I will try to upload both before and after of each image with visible resolution when I get a chance.

how about mentioning the cause of the Aiptasia(nutrient problem) than just how to fix it by adding other animals to control it?

I dont quite understand that.

I bought some coral from a reefer that had aiptasia on in and it spread, I haven't had a single problem with algae on the other hand and my levels are all in check.

The only nutrients in the tank are in the form of fish food. I am not going to starve my fish to starve out the aips.

jmkins,

1) why would you buy corals that had these pests on them anyway? did you quarantine the corals and try and kill the aiptasia before putting them in your dislpay?

2) what I meant by nutrients is that alot of foods predominately that are packed with juice(not flake or pellet) are like rocket fuel for aiptasia.

seaflowers that link didn't work. Could you post it again?

The corals were bought from across the country unfortunately, or else I would have passed on them.

All that I do feed is flake right now, my levels are all well within the acceptable range. Everything else is thriving but unfortunately the aips are too. These things are like the STDs of the reefing world. I make one irresponsible purchase and let it slide and now I have to suffer through a terrible outbreak. At least now I know enough to ask these things first and demand some clinical tests.

Well I personally agree that animals aren't always the best solution to taking care of problems. In this case I fully intend to pass on my nudi's to somenone who has a problem locally. I do everything that I can to be responsible with the livestock that goes into my tank as well as the livestock that goes out.

yeah i think i am going to try the peppermint shrimp and maybe one of the filefish...i cleaned up my tank a LOT this weekend, and it would look PERFECT w/o those damn pests in there

berghia just aren't worth the money to me

I made best experieces with the Bristle-tail file-fish (Acreichthys tomentosus), if your tank is full of Aiptasias and majanos:

- Acreichthys tomentosus

This fish is easy to keep and more effectiv than berghia, wich often flys in the powerheads or skimmer.

If there are only a small few of aiptasias in your tank, peppermint shrimps are recommanded.

Sudad- what other (if any) desirable invertebrates does your Filefish eat or bother?

I had an overwhelming population of aptasia, and tried injecting them, boiling water,etc.. Only made them spread. I tried peppermint shrimp, but they really didn't seem to make a dent. Then I tried a copperband butterfly. It worked great. It took a few months to clean them all out, but I haven't seen one in quite awhile. The cbb doesn't touch my clam or corals, but from what I've read that can be hit or miss.
